Wow. Have been highly critical of Treliving. But signing Neal and Ryan significantly shires yo the right side. Guess Brouwer will be bought out unless we can find a taker. Altogether Trelivimg has done great. Flames are second only to the Leafs and Blues for upgrading their roster in the offseason.
Couldn't have woken up to better news! The only position I'm nervous about now is goaltending. Hoping Smitty stays healthy and that both Gillies and Rittich are having quality training sessions focusing on the upcoming season.
Stoked AF for the season to start!

Yeah overpaying to get no NTC is a good move here - means maybe Seattle decides to take him in 2-3 years in an expansion draft.
With the contracts for 4th line guys like Beagle and Roussell being $3M+ yesterday, and Berglund and Sobokta being moved it makes me wonder if Brouwer with salary retained could be moved.
Feels like two years of Brouwer at $2.5M left per season (if the Flames retain $2M) wouldn’t be impossible to move.
Where is that confirmation? If so that would be a bonus. Usually a NTC with 10 teams eligible to trade to. BT does not do NMC (except in first couple years of contract (Brouwer)).
Even if we're buying out Brouwer, would it not make more sense to do it at the end of the season?
IMO, no.
The only benefit you get by paying him for one more year is to save $1.5 million in cap space in 2021-22. What that costs you, however, is $3 million extra this year, and you have a bad player dragging the roster down.
Almost literally the only argument for keeping Brouwer this year is that ownership would rather pay the guy to suck than pay him to go away.
As far as Neal goes, wrong side of 30 and a dirty player. Not thrilled about that. But he fills a major hole in this roster. And the lack of trade protection means we should be able to move him in a few seasons. Not bad overall.

ren lavoie. And BT has not given a NMC in his time with the Flames.
If you file arbitration, you can't walk away from the award (not that Hathaway's award would be significant anyway). Buying out Brouwer just doesn't seem like something Treliving would do at this point. If he was going to buy him out, I think he would have done it during the regular buyout period.
If the Flames were willing to retain $1.5 million on Brouwer, I wonder if there'd be interest in him at $3 million? He would bring veteran leadership to a young team, and he did put up 22 points last year, playing mostly on the lower lines. He can also play both sides of the special teams.
Also, if Treliving put him on the market, I think there'd be interest in Frolik. His actual salary is below his cap hit for the rest of his contract, which would appeal to some teams. I could see Frolik either going back to Winnipeg, or possibly Ottawa.
Stone would also probably generate some interest. Again, Ottawa would be a good destination, especially if they move Karlsson.
Neal is way better than Maroon...that would be bad if we picked up Maroon. Eat some salary and send Brouwer to Edm so they can use him in all situations. Brouwerplay over there.
You looked at the potential roster and it was still missing something. Now it really isn't. A big power forward who knows how to score goals is exactly what we needed.
If our new coach is for real, this team will make some noise methinks.

In this case I view dirty player as a good thing tbh. Aside from Tkachuk and Gio, this roster is a baby’s ass. It just got a little meaner
