If your backup plan is Vanek when you're going after Tavares you're going to have a bad time... Try selling that to your fans! Sorry guys we missed out on a franchise player, but we got a journeyman hanging on by a thread in the NHL!

I think more likely it is other, higher profile targets that are part of the Tavares backup plan, but the stall in these negotiations are clogging the entire market—creating a trickle-down which is holding up everything.

Sounds like Derek Ryan is the #Flames first choice for a reliable Right shot centre.
We shouldn't be surprised by the fact that Treliving has had conversations with everybody including scoring wingers; James Neal, James Van Riemsdyk, Patrick Maroon

#Flames have lost what little "truculence" they had over the last year: Deryk Engelland (to Vegas) and Micheal Ferland (traded to Canes). Toughness is on their radar but they're not going to go out of their way for it... It could be a fun day tomorrow

I'm not overly concerned about face punching ability more than getting the entire team to buy in when it comes to scrums and getting into the face of some jack hole thats abusing one of our players. Need more of that. hopefully we get that.
Too many times last season there was a lack of gumption to defend team mates. I think thats what we miss most about Engelland.

Bracing for Maroon getting a Brouwer-esque deal.
More bracing for the reactions here I suppose. He's exactly what they want but probably more than they hoped to pay.

I'm more concerned about lighting the lamp than face punching.

Call it whatever you like, but the Flames HAVE to add some size and toughness. They were buttery soft last year and lost one of the main pieces that provided it.
The West is a big heavy conference and the Flames are not built to compete that way as it stands right now.

Dont know of its been forgotten but seeing how inept the entire team without Johnny Mony and Matty was down the stretch... more guys that don't need to be surrounded with talent to snipe the odd goal may be more important than a bit of sandpaper. You can find an ##### to plug in later. Id wager there's a few guys that don't cost a pretty penny willing bring some meanness to the flames for an nhl gig.

Scoring Winger

Having an adequate power play would be an excellent deterrent to the delta bravo nonsense the team was targeted with last year. I mean ####, you know the other teams were enabled by the putrid power play we trotted out.
I’m fine with the situational face puncher player if needed.

Lets be honest. Sam Bennett offered more toughness than Ferland last season. Not sure why people keep bringing him up like we lost a tough player. When Ferland wasn't scoring he was largely invisible.

This is what I’ve been thinking since Maroon’s name has kept coming up.

Ferland is tough as hell, but he quit fighting for the most part. Probably worried about having a concussion end his career before he even gets a decent pay day. Not to mention how concussions can basically ruin your entire life. And I don't say that begrudgingly. If I was in his spot I'd probably be the same way. He's already had at least one concussion.

Disagree. Ferland's two fights last year were as a response to dangerous hits. Ferland also led the Flames in hits.
The worst thing that happened to Ferland was that Vancouver series. People assume that is how he should always play. Even that year's Ferland wasn't able to last - he limped into the Anaheim series and was out after game 1.

He was still hitting guys though, thats not really debateable as he was the leader on the team in that department.
