Rookies arn't really supposed to be impact players. They are supposed to be replacement level players, who develop into impact players in year two or three.
We just always seem to be infatuated with other teams replacement level players and not our own. And the players we always bring in have generally peaked.

Ryan Rishaug @TSNRyanRishaug
Oilers had brief conversation on Rieder but looks like they’re out at this point. Flames, Canucks, Habs and Sens remain in the mix with a few others. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Kyle Brodziak return to Edmonton. Strong interest from both sides, deal very possible

Rieder probably demanded Lucic money and that Chia be launched into space. Chia probably considered it.

[QUOTE=Geeoff;6726545]IMO if young players can't come in and outplay Brouwer, Lazar or Hathaway, then they are still AHL players.[/QUOTE/]
Exactly right .I'm not sure if its accurate or true but one of the things I heard about Fox not wanting to sign here was the depth of young defenseman we have and he didn't think he'd beat out the other Dman in the organization. I heard about this back in may but agin it's only hearsay.if they young guys on the farm can't beat out our vets on the 3rd 4th line then they don't belong with the Big Club yet in my opinion

I'm so sick and tired of overpaying UFAs for bottom six roles. I'd much rather pay a little more for JVR than overpay someone on the bottom line. Haven't the years of Brouwer and Stajan been a big enough hint?

Problem with JVR is you sign him for 6 or 7 years and he'll fall off the usefulness cliff in 4 or 5 years. Might be stuck with a brutal caphit for the last 2 years of his contract.

He’s such a risk especially at the contract he’s going to get.

I use JVR as an example. Whether we overpay for a bottom six or top six player, Flames end up with a contract one would rather not have in the final years. Why not have it with a player who can contribute to an area of weakness (goal scoring) instead of to a plug.
Look at it this way, would you rather overpay for Troy Brouwer or James Neal? Let's assume you had to pick one.

Well James Neal apparently wants $7M and a long-term deal. I think 5, 6, or 7 years of $7M Neal is a horrible idea.

Neither, but it doesn't matter because we are already stuck with Brouwer, so it's even more prudent we don't saddle ourselves with another contract that will pay a declining player well into their mid 30s.
Hopefully we stay far away from the guys atop the UFA list this year at forward.

Honestly I'd rather take a gamble on a couple of cheaper guys than give a guy like JVR a huge contract.
Every year there are players that sign for 1-2M and they get 40 pts for the team. If we can get find some of these guys for our 3rd and 4th line then we'll be in great shape.
I think the rumoured guys (Ryan, Rieder) are solid targets.

Rieder is the guy I want the most, more than ryan, jvr, czarnik, etc due to cost and I think he’d fit well

Well I guess if you watch an organization start bartkowsi to start the year over prospects then watch the young highest scoring defenseman take a year and a half to make the number one PP unit while signing a third pairing defenseman in stone for more than he deserves despite having an abundance of young d prospects waiting to fill those roles you might wonder the same thing.
The defense was terrible last year, the team underachieved big time as a whole and we still didn't see enough of our d prospects to allow them to prove themselves. Why would fox want to sign here?

All the people crying for a top talent will be the first to complain about the overpayment it would take to get them here.
It's a wonder none of them have full time GM job. Maybe they can ask Eric Francis's mom?
