Not true at all. The only difference is Peters takes a sterner approach and has no problem throwing a player under the bus if he has a bad game. To me this is an excusable blunder given what is out there. I have not minded Treliving up to this point but if his intentions are to hire Peters and the owners actually do want Sutter I would rather the owners just fire Treliving before he can sign Peters to a contract. I am absolutely tired of watching this team flounder year after year and if our GM's solution is to bring in a guy with a worse coaching record than the guy he just fired then he needs to be gone as well. Call it hyperbole or overreacting, I don't care, this is how I feel. Now not only are we going to have the exact same problem of low quality shots that don't score but outshoot the opposition but have to worry about this idiot calling out players to the media and possibly driving them out of town.

I'm fine with Peters. I was fine with GG's system as it was producing tons of chances... it was his baffling player usage, lack of line shuffling and inability to inspire the team that drove me insane. If Peters can do those things as well as keep Calgary a top possession team, I'll be content and expect a much improved Flames team.
If Tre does go with Peters, I think we can expect him to go all in and make a MAJOR move for scoring help to ensure that all our scoring chances aren't wasted due to lack of scoring depth/talent.

I am convinced Bill Peters is coming to Calgary as a coach. I am not convinced he'll be the Head Coach.

Wasn't it Peter's who verbally threw Lack under the bus during a live media scrum?
At least that would bring some entertainment value.

Half of the league misses the playoffs and half the teams that make it are one and done.
What is a successful season for the Flames next year? 100 points and a good first round win or lose?

I played along last two coach hires. Pinch your nose and live with it.
Not this time; I don't like this.
I may not be as informed as some of the others on this site, but the only rationale I see for supporting this hire, if it happens, is blind optimism.

I get what you're saying, but to me, and maybe its just me, a team should be breaking even or making money in the regular season which is sure dollars. Realistically playoff revenue should be the gravy that you can put into future investment.
Nobody doing accounting and budgeting is going to use an if then figure to calculate their budget.

At the time as an outsider I didn't care for how he threw Lack under the bus. After seeing Lack in a Flames jersey I now understand where he was coming from.

I'm surprised there are so many people on Calgarypuck who have watched enough Carolina Hurricanes game over the past four years to accurately assess Peters' tactical approach and player usage decisions, while factoring in the minor league goaltending his teams got in the process.
Especially surprising considering how many people didn't know who Jaccob Slavin was when he received Norris votes or re-signed in Carolina. Watch enough to know the coach's systems in and out but don't know who their number one defenseman is? Seems legit.

Sorry I can't tell if you are saying they are the same or different. What you articulated is a pretty big difference in style IMO. How are they similar in coaching style then? There lack of track record is similar, but that has nothing to do with style. So rather than say I'm wrong, tell me how their styles are the same?

We'll I'd say that 100+ points and getting through the first round would easily be considered a success, but GG pitched that this year so I'm afraid to be optimistic again.

This is sickening news on an otherwise great Friday.
I sure hope this is fakenews or some Russian hacker Oilers fan spreading BS to journalists. Disguating if the news is true.

Exactly. Just take a look at Johnston in Pittsburgh. They finish his first year with a below-average offense, barely squeak into the last wild card spot, and lose 4-1 in the first round. People are calling them a top-heavy team that's overly reliant on a few stars, the team isn't deep enough, etc. Eerily similar to GG's first season.
Then in his second year they dropped to 28th in scoring and were bouncing in and out of a wild card spot. Again, pretty reminiscent of the flames under GG.
Difference is, they fired him in December of year 2, hired Sullivan, changed their style of play, and won the next 2 cups. Now it looks ridiculous to question the quality of their core. Obviously there were a few trades in there, but they acquired Kessel before their scoring dropped to 28th in the league. After they replaced the coach they rebounded strongly enough to finish 3rd in scoring. If that's not evidence of the impact of the coach I don't know what is

Their teams play the exact same system. The Calgary Flames regularly outshot the opposition but could not score. The Carolina Hurricanes regularly outshot the opposition but couldn't score. The Hurricanes had strong Corsi for %, the Flames had strong Corsi for %. GG was terrible at making adjustments and line decisions, go look on the Hurricanes HF board and you will see the exact same complaint about Peters. The only difference is one was a softy who was a players coach and the other is a taskmaster who will take you to woodshed publicly for a poor performance.

I find it interesting that Treliving thought he could salvage Lack from the situation he was in. A situation on a poor team in which Peter's was the coach. I like be optimistic but it's tough, I'd like to at least see him in action at the IIHF world championships next month prior to signing him.
