It is pretty easy nowadays to read a thread and know exactly who and how it will be derailed. The pattern repeats often.

I find it ironic that there is any expectation of civility when there are such a large number of posters that are comfortable posting on a hate thread.

i think a good rule of thumb people should follow is, before you hit the "Enter" key, is your post something you would say to that poster if they were right in front of you?
if not, you might want to consider rephrasing your point... or whether you actually have one.

I agree, the GT were usually a place of optimism. It became really difficult to come into them and you saw as the season went on they became less active. It just snowballed into a mess. There were portions where I would get home from a game and scroll through a GT and it seemed like I was at a completely different game.
Sometimes it felt like it was a giant troll job. At times logic just seemed to be tossed out the window and people were posting negative things for the hell of it.
I get people are unhappy, but it got downright nasty.

I feel like this place is already a lot better since chronic trolls like Tinordi and calgaryblood were banned. Some people just want to drag every thread into the muck and that in turn degrades the quality of every discussion. I actually think this place is in a better spot than it was when I left.
My advice is use to use the report feature when you see posters who keep dragging discussions down without adding any contributions themselves. The pure trolls tend to rile everyone up and make the mood more hostile.
But yeah, we could all stand to be a bit more civil in our discourse.

You know if you whisper his name in a mirror three times he appears behind you right? So there's that.

I was hoping we'd find out how the plastic garbage bag got into the bathtub of calgaryblood. Guess we'll never know

I used to use the game threads as a way to get some insight into games I wasn't able to watch. Highlight packages don't provide much detail. For a while now they've become composed almost entirely of people micro-analyzing their personal whipping boy and cataloguing their every mistake. I don't even bother with them at this point.

I agree with this whole heartedly. GTs have been the biggest victims of this cycle of toxicity we find ourselves in. 1/3 through the season I too felt like I was watching a very different game than what most folks her were seeing,, though as someone pointed out, this might be due to the 1% rule

At some point I suggested (and made it clear it was only that) that people try to just post about gameplay and not go off on general Flames stuff they didn't like. Of course I was accused of trying to dictate what people posted and how dare I try to tell them what they can and can't say.

The Trump win really sidetracked a lot of the political threads but they seem to be coming back to somewhat normal outside of the American thread.
My only issue is I got a 1 month suspension for not knowing what a word meant and asking for clarification (maybe I could have been clearer) and missed the survivor pool.

this is a team that has 1 playoff series win since 2004 and struggles to make the playoffs every year. I just think things would be a lot more positive around here if this were like a consistent 100 point team that does damage in the playoffs.

It's human psychology
I think part of the problem with game threads is that one type of person who is likely to post repeatedly in them is the type of person who has verbal diarrhea. Just typing every thought that pops into their head as if it needs to be shared with the world. Some of these verbal diarrhea posters are emotional and/or young/immature and/or drunk. So what you end up with in these types of real time reaction threads is some of the most vocal and frequent posters having a lot of emotional, off the cuff, not very well thought off verbal diarrhea type responses. This in turn elicits responses from some more level headed, stable posters and off you go, conflict ensues.
I don't really see how you get around it. A real time reaction thread is basically the perfect place for ill-thought out, emotion based overreactions. You create a forum with thousands of users and a GT will end up being dominated by these personalities and takes. It's unfortunate but I'm not really sure how you could ever get around it. One way perhaps would be to have a game time Chat application where everybody who wants to overreact, blame, rage, throw fits, etc can spam in real time with other high volume, low quality posters. Then have a thread on the board for more considered analysis of each period. I dunno.
Basically once you have a big enough community real time reaction threads are by nature going to be filled with a high volume of reactionary, emotional type responses. Those seeking considered analysis are going to be turned off and fail to find much of any.

I think part of that is true, but I think there will still be an aspect of people that are only happy when the world burns. That pretty much what the internet has evolved to. Just the sign of the times really. Maybe things were just easier before the explosion of the social media. Back when your first user name was your name or a variation of your real name.

There was a time when I liked tuning into GT:s to feel like I was watching the game with people. That feeling of connection was invaluable to someone like me who doesn't actually have anyone to watch Flames games with. There used to be a lot more celebration in them, every goal would get easily a page full of people just typing "WOOHOO!" or something equally pointless. That was fun.

This place is civil. Im really not sure what the complaining is about. Has there been an influx of tender millenials that need a safe space forum on this board where no negativity is allowed? Maybe we can have a Flames sub-forum where only positivity is allowed; no discussion of score; no talk of winners and losers; only talk of players strengths, not there weaknesses..
Many of the comments and conplaints in this thread are bizarre. I dont know what world some posters live in if theyre complaining about this place.
