Nah, time to move on from Matt Stajan the hockey player. Seems like such a great team guy though, so whenever he decides to hang up the skates there must be a suit and tie job around here somewhere he can have.

No and he's probably going to retire anyways.

I am not saying it was a bad moment as every Flames fan (heck Oilers fans for that matter) were all extremely happy for Stajan when he scored that goal.
In 8.5 years and $30M there is that goal and one other playoff goal that are memorable for him. 8.5 years and nearly $30M in salary. Stajan’s time with the Flames has largely been a disappointment and the team will most likely move on.

Th Flames have 6-7 top level forwards, 5 top-4 d-men and an above average Goalie.
The biggest problem seems to be the bottom 6 forwards of which Stajan is one.
Were it possible all the bottom 6 forwards over the age of 22 should be let go and replaced

Tis merely a joke, mon ami. Intended to be taken as such.
Matt Stajan the person is a great Calgarian, and I'm proud that he's been a member of the Flames for as long as he has.
Matt Stajan the NHL hockey player doesn't have much left in the tank, and in my opinion it is unfortunately time to move on.
That doesn't diminish what he's done in the community, or what's he's been to the Flames for many years. I truly hope he and his wife stay in Calgary when he retires.

Honestly I think Matt deserves to be extended. He brings tremendous leadership and has actually been playing well lately. I think he deserves an 8x8 contract and should be given the A that brouwer currently possesses

On a cheap one or two year deal, I think so. I don't see him being as bad as he gets a reputation for on here, and I argue that he is likely our best penalty killer. He's no offensive dynamo, but he's an almost ideal fourth line centre. A couple of guys like him around the locker room while we try and graduate some of our younger players to the NHL level can't hurt either.
I like Stajan, but if the ask is anywhere close to his current salary, which I just can't see, then obviously you move on.

I would sign him on a cheap 1 yr deal. He would be the perfect 13th forward, better to have a vet sitting in the press box than a young kid.

Stajan is a great guy and has represented the Flames well. But the Flames definitely should not extend Stajan's contract. We need to move on to a younger faster player as our 4th round centre (Shore, Lazar?). We cannot sacrifice a roster spot for Stajan. The Flames do need to celebrate Stajan's time as a Flame. I am not sure what role Stajan could play in the organization after retirement, but like Big Ern I hope there is a spot for him.

I don't think Stajan will have a job anywhere in the NHL next year.

No, this is a business, put the best hockey players on the ice, not the best guys.

No chance.
Monahan, Backlund, Bennett, Janko, Lazar, Shore. That's already 6 guys for the four spots, and that doesn't take into account that there are kids in the A that should be pushing for a fourth line role. Nevermind that Tree has built the cap to allow the Flames to take a shot at Tavares or Stastny. Highly unlikely that they land either, but still, it's past the time to move on from Stajan.

Calgary has the worse bottom 6 in the league, and Matt Stajan is the poster boy for that statement.
They need to improve those positions, and it starts with not resigning Matt Stajan.

I just assumed Shore would be the 4C next year. Need more speed and forecheck in the bottom 6 and 13/14 forwards which means a no go for Stajan.

I like Matt Stajan. He is a great human and has supplied me with a goal I'll never forget (see Game 6 vs. Vancouver, 2015).
Please don't re-sign him.

You know I really don't want Stajan back because I want a younger bottom 6, and think his current contract has always been bad, but I think he sometimes gets too much flak as a scape goat for this teams problems, or when he's been called one of the worst players in the NHL.
His 10 ES points are pretty comparable to most other 4th liners, the coaching staff still buries him in defensive zone FOs (he actually has the highest of % of FOs in the d-zone of all our centers), and he hasn't been a defensive liability on the ice this year.
He's only been on the ice for 12 GA all season long. His GA/60 minutes of ice time are the lowest on the team at 1.33 (a full half goal lower than the next closest Flame at 1.86) and the second lowest in the NHL.
He's mostly sheltered and plays exclusively against other teams bottom 6 but for the most part he comes out ahead in those matchups from a GF/GA perspective.
So while he doesn't provide very much offense, and the contract isn't very good, he's still an alright 4th line defensive center who the team can trust to take a defensive zone faceoff and not give up a goal.
Honestly if he were making $1M this year vs $3M he'd be fine. It's just that that damn contract has been so bad since the day Burke signed it.

Why is everyone so high on Shore ? He had he value of a conditional 7th and hasn’t done a thing in the few games he played . Is it just because he’s new and we haven’t seen him be as useless as our other bottom 6 yet !
