Pretty good game by the Flames last night. Have to echo a lot of what has been said so far. FMG was a bit off and wasn't that dangerous. Ferland was just behind the play all night for some reason. TBF was pretty good and dominant at times on the cycle. Tkachuk continues to be a monster on the puck. BJH was the best line on the ice, and by a good margin. Jankowski is going to be ridiculous in that number two center role. The fourth line was a disaster. I feel for Brouwer, as he's the only one that still looks like a NHL player, but they need to retool this line. Stajan and Lazar just can't play at this level. It wasn't a fantastic performance by the team, but it was still good enough to beat one of the better teams in the league.

Still don't understand why Hamilton is not a regular on the #1PP. The guy has double digit goals the past 3 years and a big point producer. The #1PP should be loaded up.

Interesting that GG said the goal was his fault and not Brouwer's (something about coaching the position on that play). I think it was all on Brouwer not moving his feet. I'm not a Brouwer hater and I thought he played a decent game otherwise, especially on the PK. But for sure that goal was because he got walked.

Hamilton's points on the powerplay since he came to Calgary:
2017/18: 4
2016/17: 14
2015/16: 16
Brodie's dring that same time:
2017/18: 9
2016/17: 12
2015/16: 9
Giordano's:
2017/18: 4
2016/17: 14
2015/16: 19
Maybe they're onto something, because Brodie is on pace to score the most PPP in a year by a Flames defenseman since Hamilton joined the team. However, that is likely to change because Brodie isn't on the top PP unit anymore. Will that change and Brodie gets back on the top unit? I don't know, but Giordano and Hamilton's stats have dropped off quite a bit because they haven't been on the top unit. It will be interesting to see what happens at the end of the season in correlation to powerplay points between those three guys. I feel Hamilton could have the most if given the opportunity.

a lot of evidence on the surface points to Brouwer being one of GG's blindspots, but how it got that way is a mystery. GG is an analytics-heavy coach, and Brouw is one of the worst in the league by most standard measures. and there's no Vancouver or Dallas connection there to generate extra rope either.
the only reasons therefore could either be the Flames metrics are totally different than what's available to us, i.e. they show Brouwer is effective in ways that we cannot observe. or he's just staying in the lineup for the team to find justification for his big salary, while possibly showcasing for trade potential.

I haven't paid attention, especially to advanced stats, but I'm turning the corner. Was Brouwer's advanced stats bad before he came to Calgary? I'm wondering if he is a bad fit in Calgary or GG isn't using him properly, or the latter becuase of the former or some sort of blend.

They weren't Kris Russell bad but they were definitely below average. His production was boosted heavily by being part of some good powerplay units. He was pretty much a Lance Bouma at 5v5 for most of his career.

GG, like most coaches these days, likes the 4 forward system. So Hamilton in = Gio out. I'd have said sure, if it was Hamilton v. Brodie, but Gio is superior to both in so many ways.

Both Stajan and Brouwer are terrible on the PK. But especially Brouwer. I could not BELIEVE he was right back on the ice for the beginning of the next PK. It took 3 months to get Brouwer off the PP so probably another 3 to get off the PK.

I am pretty surprised that Carter Hutton did not get a game star. He made at least a half dozen ten-bell saves.

It was on every SN channel after the Leaf game. If you had access to a Sportsnet channel, you could watch the game.

Since Nov 20, the Flames had (until last night) the #1 PK in the league IIRC. 6GA in 47 chances.
Stajan and Brouwer are a big part of that PK.
Truly not a lot to complain about there. Yes he got caught flat footed last night, that happens.

Yes our PK is better but I believe we have much better personnel than Brouwer to deploy on the PK.. Slow players should not be on the PK. (imo)
Bennett has been looking great on the PK. Give Janko more PK time, even Lazar is at least tenacious.

By trying?
Here's what I did. When I saw the channel I was watching went wonky, I changed it to a different channel to see if it was my cable box, or if it was just that channel. By flipping through the channels I was able to come to the conclusion the game was on every single feed of Sportsnet. I picked the SNW feed over the SNP feed, because it was about 1 second ahead.
I will now await my MacArthur Fellowship award.

Yeah, but switching to another Sportsnets channel doesn't help people who PVR the game.
