Have any specific details of this injury been released though? Has his play this year been affected by any kind of injury perhaps? He was such a useful bottom 6 last year that something hasn't seemed quite right at all this year.

Month to month after upcoming hip surgery on Monday.

I thought the reason why he didn't stay in Europe last year was related to hip or back.

The speculation was either his knee or his hip, I believe the same leg.

Does Hathaway need to go through waivers if he gets sent down? If so, I hope Familton should get sent because he already cleared.

If he plays 10 games while recalled (he's at 6 games currently), he'll need to go through waivers again. Hamilton's waivers have expired, so he'd need to clear again to be sent down (shouldn't be a problem).

It's not really something they need to worry about for a couple of months at least. If Versteeg is out until at least after the trade deadline, they won't have to worry about it at all.

Had to admit, I was not a big fan of Hathaway's play the last few season whenever he gets called up. I feel like he needs to add more to agitating skills before. I mean he is more satisfied with playing in the 4th as an agitator and no offensive skills at all.
In this last call up, he is playing much better. He can still annoy a lot of players but at the same time he can be an offensive threat out there. He is playing fast with directions, making good plays and still a pest. He really compliment with Jankowski and Bennett line. If he keeps up, both GG and Tre will have a hard decision to make because I think with his play right now he deserves to stay. Question now, who will the Flames send to Stockton when Versteeg comes back healthy? I think Hathaway is more deserving to stay over Lazar and Freddie Hamilton. If both Versteeg and Jagr are both playing, i would see both Lazar and Stajan even sits out. I think Versteeg can play C with Brouwer and Jagr on the 4th line.

What? Hathaway impressed the last year he came up. Both Brent Burns and Andrew Shaw were mind boggled with his agitating last year.

Freddie Hamilton is a easy send down when Versteeg gets healthy.

To be fair, Shaw is agitated by his own teammates.

Versteeg will be injured for a few months still and the trade deadline will come and go. Once that happens teams can carry more than 23 players so no one will have to be sent down.

Who draws in each night however will be interesting. Jagr and Versteeg have chemistry but would the Flames actually scratch Brouwer or make him or some other winger play 4th line C?

Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Bennett-Jankowski-Hathaway
Versteeg-Stajan-Jagr

That 4th line has got to be one of the slowest ones out there.

Brouwer, Stajan and Jagr are just as slow, but they looked pretty good (mind you, it was against the Canucks).

True but he was missing the offensive stuff last call-up. Playing with Jankowski and Bennett, he is more well-rounded. On offense, he is much more involved and he is even trying to make plays. Defensively, i knew he can be counted on. As agitator, no question there.

Technically Freddie Hamilton is an easy player to be sent down but for some reason management wants him to stay in the NHL even just to sit around most of the games. Hamilton, Lazar and even Stajan I think are the 3 players we can do without. I don't mind Stajan but he won't get send down because even when he is not contributing on the ice, he can still help with the leadership. I don't think management wants him in the minors either. Flames definitely won't re-sign him though. Lazar, on the other hand is just frustrating. I love watching him in junior and I think he's got potential to be a good NHLer but I am not sure. I would love to see him playing on a regular basis but he is very inconsistent. Hope to see him start contributing offensively soon; otherwise time to give another young guy like Mangiapanne a chance.

Quick note on Versteeg; he will be seeing a specialist on January 22 to update his status. Kristen Odland had an article on him a couple of days ago:

http://calgarysun.com/sports/hockey/...er-hip-surgery

Quote:
Versteeg isn’t cleared to skate just yet, but he’s working on strengthening, physiotherapy, movement patterns and building on it day-by-day.

The injury was similar to the hip ailment which prevented the two-time Stanley Cup champion from playing in the Swiss league with SC Bern prior to the 2016 hockey season. However, Versteeg this time, in some ways, is worse than his last surgery.

“In the end, it was the exact same surgery,” said the Lethbridge native who has been limited to 22 games this season. “It was a little different than when I was 25 dealing with it. I only missed about 12 games that year because of it. But this year with it happening, it needed to be done.”

There’s no clear timeline on his return to the ice, but Versteeg said he will know more when he sees the New York-based surgeon on Jan. 22.
He was also on Sportsnet 960 this morning; only caught part of the segment but you can tell he's someone who is well liked in the room and is a good veteran presence.

Hate to break it to you man but Versteeg might be finished as a flame. IMO it is very likely.

Hmm let me think on that, how confident I am on it heh
Something like Versteeg plays less than 10 games as a flame in 2018?

You said you doubted he'd be back at all. How about 5?
