So the difference between Draisaitl and Bennett is about a Gaudreau?

Every Oilers game we can say Draisaitl makes 6.5 mill more than Bennett so let's see who outperforms the contract.

For the next two years, Draisaitl will cost more than Bennett and Monahan combined.

It's going to be glorious.

All that for this?

Kidding aside great contract for both sides. Sam hasn't proven squat and still walks away with all of his best years still ahead at the ripe old age of what 23?

Two years of what I think is one of the best young players we have had in the organization at under 2 is going to be hard to not live up to. Win win.

Glad to have you Sam.

I predict 24 goals from Mr. Bennett this season. Book it!

Now there's definitely a bit of a cap squeeze on the horizon in 2 years with Ferland, Tkachuk and Bennett all due for big raises if things go well, but there are still options we could exercise to get some more space if needed:
  • Buyout last year of Brouwer (saves 3 mill)
  • Trade Stone (saves 3.5mill - ELC of whoever takes his place)
  • Replace a departing Smith with Parsons (dirt cheap starting goalie)
True enough.
But if all three are due for big raises (based on their play), then that's a problem I don't mind the Flames having.

Next season, when Drai scores 60 points and Bennett gets 48, those extra points will be worth a half mill each.

That is exactly the strategy here. Let these guys prove which one deserve the big money. If they all prove worthy, then this team will likely have made some noise along the way.

They are in a way, because to compete you need players over performing their contracts - entry level deals / bridge deals etc are a key to this.

Cap is cap is cap, no matter who you pay. If you pay Kassian this much money instead of having young players filling this role... well, that's just it, isn't it?

We might now have enough room to sign Jagr and still have flexibility at the deadline.
