a 30 year old d-man who has played 20+ minutes the last 4 seasons and has 9 playoff series in his 10 year career... 6 in his last 3 years as a top-4 d-man.
His contract will be over when he is 34. That is the age that Gio is this fall when he starts the last 5 years of his 6.75M NTC.
I think we're all aware that the last 2-3 years of the Giordano contract are going to be tough. 4x4 for Russell is silly term. That's a guy you sign for 1-2 years max. If he doesn't take it, so long, see you later.

What's the deal with the Kris Russel hate? He was one of their best D-men last season, and would get snatched up by any number of teams if he hit the market again this year.
The 'hate' is situational, and he is a black hole in fancystat circles. I liked Russell, and for his sake, I'm happy he's getting paid.
But this contract is worthy of the same derision as the Engelland deal we signed was. Perhaps more since it is a year longer and $1 million per year greater. For what Russell gives, that is a massive overpay.

Surprised that you neglected to mention, top 10 NHL D, 24 yr old Doug Hamilton.
He has 4 more years at 5.75. STEAL
Or 27 yr old TJ Brodie at 4.8 for 3 more years at 4.8. STEAL
Regarding Gio, another top 10 D in the NHL, he remains the face and the backbone of the Flames. He will continue in that role for at least the foreseeable future...next 3 to 4 seasons.
Go hug your wet blanket.

Excellent chance Russell and the Oilers finalize a deal today. Expect the range to be 4m x 4 years.
On its own, it's not a terrible contract. Maybe $1M more per year than I would pay him but there's plenty of guys overpaid by $1M+ in this league. However, when you factor in the upcoming big contracts the Oilers are going to have to figure out... Spending $10M on Russell and Lucic while you negotiate a McDavid deal is going to look really ugly.

Let me guess. You would rather have him over Dougie Hamilton?
