Engelland was good for the Flames, but would anyone honestly want to give him another three year contract at age 35?

Expected he would move along, but still not happy with it. Played very well in his role in Calgary, and one of the only tough customers on the roster. Was hoping he would return although I think we all knew that was unlikely. Guessing BT will be in the market for some toughness on July 1st, at least I hope he is.
Good luck to DE, hope he does really well in Vegas.

This could be one of those rumoured "throwaway picks". I just don't get why they'd take a UFA if they hadn't already signed him.
Not a huge loss, I was hoping he'd come back for another year or two but I didn't expect it. As expected the Flames are not hurt by this draft. This is a good thing.

I didn't want him back on a 1 year deal. He slowed down this year and was a liability for most of it. It sucks, but that happens when players age. Just have to go find another guy that fits that mould, just like we did when Sarich left.

Is there any source on this beyond Boomer and Shannon? Because if not, I'm going to go with common sense and think it's probably not true...

Mostly disappointed the Brouwer anchor is still around, even though deep down I knew there was little chance he moved. Worst part is his play was even worse than I expected, and I expected it to be terrible...hopefully he can at minimum return to just terrible.
But, Engelland was my third choice behind Brower outright or Vegas signing Stone as a UFA so the Flames don't fall into the PDO trap and overpay.
Awesome the Flames didn't lose Kulak in this, though. He is exactly what you want on your third pairing in today's game and the cap era: Can skate, defaults to outlet pass first instead of defaulting to punting off the glass and out, doesn't make many egregious mistakes, and is affordable.

Was worried we would try to bring him back, glad if it's taken out of Brad's hands.

Going to have to disagree with this part. He was solid for most of the year, was only exposed when he had to play extended minutes for more than a couple games in a row.

Vegas is getting a hell of a d-man and an even better person. Good luck Engelland! A true warrior.

We may have lost him anyways, we may not, but its always regretful and sad seeing a loyal warrior leave.
I'm sure you can understand that sentiment especially based on the information that we have, which is very little.
If Vegas signed him to a $1M contract we'd all be pissed that we lost him for so little but if they sign him to a $5M contract we'd wish him well and take umbrage in having dodged that bullet.
We did well, we could have done better but really there wasnt much of our skin in this game.

There's still time to take advantage of it so who knows, maybe there are deals to be made for a RW or defender.
Kudos to Treliving for setting the Flames up to not have anything major at risk though.

Not signing him immediately makes some sense. They are going to be flush with d-men and will have to make some trades following expansion. There is no guarantee they will find suitors for some of the players they want to unload so in terms of sequencing, see what the trade market looks like first and then sign Engelland if there is room for him.

This is about the best the Flames could have hoped for IMO. Not that I disliked Engelland by any means.

This is a dumb pick if true. Take a prospect and roll the dice. You can pick up Engelland as a UFA.

Huge fan of his. Having said that, did not want him back. Was starting to lose a gear every year and would of likely wanted a multi year contract for more money. As much as I was a fan of the player he was. I don't think that's the player he will be for the remainder of his next contract. All the best to him though!

How is this better than Vegas taking Brouwer, Stajan, or Bouma's overpriced contracts off our hands?
This beats losing a prospect, or Stone but that is about it

To be a successful GM in the National Hockey League you need to have relationships with the other 30 organizations. They can't just "pick him up for free" like a surprising amount of posters have commented.
So how does that work exactly? You tell Engelland what you want to pay him and his role, but that you won't sign him until free agency. If he agrees to some under the table deal, and the Flames were looking to offer him a contract (everything I've heard from the Fan indicates the Flames wanted to), then you basically ruin that relationship. That's almost like circumventing the expansion draft.
The other side of it.... Engelland shows interest, but you have a possibility of 30 other teams calling him on July 1. Any single one of them could offer him more money and now you don't get the player you want..... just to try and steal 2 from a team. It's ridiculous.

Sounds like Deryk Engelland is the Calgary Flames player going to Vegas. He's a UFA ON July 1

NHL gave Vegas a 48 hour window to talk to UFAs. it isn't ruining a relationship with any team. It's within the framework. I disagree with this post.
