Rangers are playing a good tight checking game, there's not much open ice.

Maybe because he can recover from mistakes with his elite skating, anticipation, and stickwork, whereas Wideman's mistakes end up in the back of the net.

Tied after 1 period with one of the elite teams in the league. I'll take it.

Rick Ball is overusing the term 'reversed whammy' since the All Star break. I've heard him say it at least 5 times over the last 2 1/3 game.
I like Rick though.

That was a fine first period for both teams. Lots of shots, 28 in total (15-13 NY).

I for one welcome Wideman the whipping boy. It keeps the irrational hate off our young developing players.
Hamilton, Gaudreau, Bennett, Monahan, and Brodie have taken enough of a whipping around here to last a life time.

Yet another shift where the Flames' offensive pressure ended on a Wideman gaf and the next 30 seconds was spent in the Flames end.

Thought Chiasson was the best Flame that period. A lot of energy, winning board battles, physical, fighting for his space in front of the net and smart with the puck.
Impressive.

I think it is force of habit for a lot of people at this point and confirmation bias. People come into the game expecting and hoping he'll be terrible and they bad mouth him regardless and even for minor trivial stuff.

This why it appears I defend Wideman. I don't actually like him much but there's just too much over emphasis on him.
Like blocks. So far Wideman shot twice, one was a good tip attempt by Ferland, one was blocked. Also blocked were Brodie on a really weak shot, Gio, Kevin (led to a 2 on 1) and Versteeg (on the PP).

Yep, and the Flames are playing pretty well, but very mistake prone on defense today. That could easily be the difference between a win and a loss. Hopefully that's their focus in the intermission.

Do 70% of Brodie's shots hit shinpads?
If/when they do, he will take the same heat

On a positive note, the Kings were crushed today.

CP needs a whipping boy, and he's a prime target. Terribad immovable contract, terribad mistakes... funny ironic last name.... etc. Let us have our whipping boy.

I would argue that having a coach that keeps encouraging and motivating players is an intergral part of success.

The whole line had a really good period. Great to see.
And overall, a good road period for the Flames. MSG is often a house of horrors, so getting out of the first tied is a win in my eyes.

Do 70% of Wideman's? No. Confirmation bias. Plus Brodie doesn't shoot very often because he has a muffin.
Wideman definitely doesn't get it though like he used to. He should wrist more, or dump to the corner. But really, it's only blocks near the blue line that are concerning. Blocks that rattle around near the goal are fine - they can lead to goals.
