I miss Blockbuster. I haven't seen any of the movies that were up this year. I really miss heading out to the store and grabbing a few movies for the weekend.
(I'm on a farm and don't have internet before you mention streaming/movies on demand)

I still can't believe either of them didn't speak up when it was pretty clear they were looking at the wrong card. Beatty clearly knew it was incorrect.

I'm guessing EY, KPMG, and Deloitte have already made inquiries about how happy the academy is with their current auditor lol.

Warren Beatty is 79 years old. I'm not saying everyone at that age is senile and completely unaware, but come on- likely not as quick on his toes as he may have been at a younger age. That, combined with the spotlight and the fact that no one would ever mentally prep themselves for that scenario...
I'm a little suspicious of the entire episode- so many headlines to compete with over the last year and very difficult to make a big splash in the news. What would have maybe been day of discussion on the Oscars turns into the biggest story of the week- and eventually one of the biggest moments in Oscar history.

Kimmel did a great job through out, him and Damon going at it was great. The screw up was... unfortunate but they did a good job of figuring it out and moving on.
Sad I have not seen a single one of these movies, it seems like if they don't come across my on demand at the right time I don't watch them. I might make a point of watching a few now though. La La Land and Hacksaw Ridge look particularly entertaining.

it's early, im tired and really pissed off from working 8 days in a row and today being the 9th (11 hour days working a committee with a liaison who hates me) so I havent bothered to catch up on the thread but... la la land not getting best picture is ####ing ridiculous. moonlight is a good movie. end of story. la la land may by itself revitalize an entire genre because it was so delightful and entertaining. this is likely the academy trying to avoid a racism debate. there. i said it.

The best picture screw up was bad, but an honest mistake. This is almost unforgivable though.
Quote:
Leading Australian producer, Jan Chapman was “devastated” by another mistake in the Oscars telecast.
In addition to the best picture gaffe, during the show’s In Memoriam segment, a photo of a living woman was mistakenly used.
Janet Patterson, an Australian costume designer and four-time Oscar nominee (“The Piano,” “Portrait of a Lady,” “Oscar and Lucinda” and “Bright Star”) passed away in October 2015.
Her name and occupation were correct in the montage, but the photo used was of Jan Chapman, a still-living Australian film producer. Check out the erroneous image above.
“I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long-time collaborator Janet Patterson. I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered. Janet was a great beauty and four-time Oscar nominee and it is very disappointing that the error was not picked up,” Chapman told Variety by email. “I am alive and well and an active producer.”

He was sharp enough to realize there was something wrong with the card. I realize he's not the route of the mistake but if he speaks up and says there may be a mistake at least the moment isn't ruined for the Moonlight people.

I think the Moonlight people are fine. How about the poor dude from La La land? Why did they keep him on stage for so long afterward as well? WTF...

Ya, I guess he was sharp enough to pass the problem onto Dunaway and let her deal with it. Everyone coming down hard on Beatty, but he never actually said anything.

Just like Chicago did in 2003? I mean Ghostbusters was considered a debacle and it almost made more money than La La Land, and the movie Trolls has made more money. Musicals will always be niche, La La Land winning would have been another "The Artist" within 12 months.

IMO the mistake overshadows their achievement as what should be their grand moment will forever be overshadowed by the blunder. It's also a downer for La La Land as you go from the euphoria of winning to having Oscar taken from your hand. It's basically the worst outcome possible for the show as everyone tunes in for the big reveal and they manage to screw it up. I suppose you could call it outstanding reality TV because there was a moment where nobody knew what was going on. You could tell something was up as I saw someone behind the acceptance speech run across the stage when the La La Land people were doing their speeches then the commotion followed and I was wondering if a nutcase was loose in the theatre or something.

Not even close to the Artist. La La Land has far, far more mainstream appeal.
You can debate whether it really will revitalize the movie musical but that has nothing to do with it being as niche as the artist.

La La Land had Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. The Artist had the dog. Of course one had more mainstream appeal. Musicals are niche though, the only times they are successful is when they have overwhelming critical acclaim and awards nominations, but you can say that for a lot of movies.

Don't get accountants to do a lawyer's job!
Glad to see Ali awarded - first Muslim to win an Oscar? Thought he was terrific in Luke Cage too.
There has been a growing back-lash against La La Land. I have not seen it myself yet, but some commentators have criticized it for being tone deaf about racism, sexism, Jazz and Los Angeles.
Halle Berry - oh my!
Poor Warren - was confused, and wasn't sure what to do. I think he assumed La La Land was meant to be best picture so he stayed quiet for a minute until he knew that was wrong.
Kudos to La La Land entourage and Beatty for stepping up and explaining. Kimmel was willing to take the blame for everything.

If I were Casey Affleck I'd have made a point of not thanking Ben.
