I don't live in Edmonton so I don't know.

Huh, I thought you did.

It's a interesting question for Calgary, though. Why have all that money tied up in Enmax if they can't even provide a dependable dividend? Isn't that the whole point of keeping them?

Actually no, business taxes are being phased out and will be gone in a few years (yay) but the decline in revenue will be added to the non residential mill rate (boo). So op costs will go up and landlords with vacant commercial property will pay more. Probably a good move politically since landlords don't get to vote.

And how the hell is Nenshi an "Unlikely champion, who took advantage of vote splitting/discontent to gain power"? I'm so lost as to how you're reaching these conclusions.

Didn't he get like 72% of the vote and is still insanely popular?

What a dumb post

Not that I agree with Clarkey at all, but Nenshi did only get 40% in his first election:

With regards to "vote splitting/discontent", I don't recall people hating on McIver or Higgins which split the vote, I recall Nenshi, a third place candidate, who's platform, campaign and social media presence launched him to the victory.

I'm not sure where the "discontent" could have stemmed from considering the old mayor was leaving and everybody was a fresh face in that race (well, except for McIver).

People didn't really warm up to Dr. No and Barb Higgins had a couple flame outs at the end.

McIver was the long time politician Hillary Clinton-esque guy that was supposed to win easily by basically continuing the status quo. Kind of a shocker he lost to a relative outsider I guess.

You can make comparisons to Nenshi's win and Trump's win based on the rising populist movement they both created, but it ends about there.

Even then, Nenshi focused on the positive and Trump on the negative. The two aren't really comparable.

Well ya, but the claim was "to gain power" not to keep it. Like I said, I don't agree at all with Clarkey, but Nenshi's first win wasn't a blowout.

Just my opinion, but I think the people who voted for Barb Higgins would have probably voted for Nenshi if she hadn't run for mayor.

If you're never going to vote for politicians on the basis of them being smug pricks....well, you're never going to vote then.

Not every politician shares Nenshi's temperament. Can you imagine Al Duerr hurling around insults on social media and getting in Twitter slap-fights?

You need a pretty big ego to succeed in politics at this level. However, having an enormous ego, plus an exceptionally thin skin, isn't a great combination. Especially if you're addicted to social media.

Would rather have smug Nenshi than Al Do-nothing, who set infrastructure back years.

Hard to build infrastructure when the province cuts off your funding in order to fight the deficit. People underestimate the extent to which Klein balanced the books on the backs of municipalities.
