It's a completely asinine schedule.
The guys have to be gassed...and they play again Wednesday.
Just crazy stuff at the NHL level.

especially in a year with a new coach and where you need all the practice time you can get. and they keep playing every other day until december 10th! horrible scheduling/luck

I know everyone loves the shiny new toy, but Janko did nothing at all out there. Zero intensity. Ferland and Versteeg were great.

I don't doubt that there is a bias against the Flames but this team is not doing itself any favours with their lazy play.
Waterskiing must've become the favourite hobby of the Calgary Flames over the summer. I don't know what happened to these players but last year, they skated like hell and chased down the opposition and bodied them off the puck. This year, everyone trys to hook and slash thinking the other player will just slow down and turn the puck over.
Incredible laziness with this team right now. Always taking the easy way out.

Jankowski was solid. Had several good shifts, including a couple where he played strongly against Tavares.
Sure, he didn't produce a highlight reel for the fans to take home, but he had a good game.

Goalies are not trained to "hug the post" unless the puck is right at the side of the net. They play percentages, and he was in great position to make the save off the shot. The tip was (a) well done and (b) lucky to find a spot to squeeze through. It didn't hit him in the chest like someone said - it went through the six hole.

Elliott is definitely to blame for us not managing to score 2 goals in a game.
I'm sick of him doing this.

I don't think that was a bad goal at the end. If Elliott saves that, people would be saying how he robbed Hickey. He didn't rob Hickey, but there was nothing bad about not being able to save that goal.
Jankowski - I thought he played a heck of a game, especially considering it was his first. He was composed out there, made some nice plays along the boards, anticipated really well on the forecheck, and came back hard every time on defence. He looked like he knew where to go and what to do. Oh, and he went 63% on the FO dot - next highest Flame was Backlund at 42%. Kid looked like an NHL'er already.
Ferland - heck of a game. Also, you are seeing with your own eyes that players don't stop developing or that there isn't room for growth in their game once they are 24. This kid has always been a bit of a late-bloomer, but he is a huge asset for the Flames right now. He does so many things so well. I bet we haven't seen what his production will end up being. I was hoping his play would inspire the team a bit more, but at least he gave it his all. Nice response from the previous night.
Wideman - how anyone can say he played terribly is beyond me. I thought next to Hamilton, he did the most to generate offence. Great outlet passing, skated well with and without the puck, and made some really nice defensive plays (like stopping Ladd). Sure, lots of people hate Wideman, but don't just put on your hate goggles on. Call it like it is at least. Wideman has been more good than bad lately - much better than Kulak has been for a while now. I am really glad that Wideman is still on this team at the moment actually.
Monahan - nice to see him get that monkey off his back a bit. He has no confidence. You can tell he is just second-guessing himself quite a bit. That makes it look like he isn't putting in the effort.
Versteeg - nice to have him back. He is what he is - and when he is on, he is on. Tonight he was definitely on.
Backlund-Frolik - these guys have been the story all year - often the ONLY bright-spots on this team. They had a bit of a rough night. You can't really say much more than that. Everyone has a bad night now and then. It is just comforting to know that they rarely have a bad night.

I know +/- isn't the be all end all but I was surprised to see our very own TJ Brodie dead last in the NHL. What the heck.

I actually didn't realize how bad it was. That's bloody intense. We should commend them for being as relatively respectable as they are.

100% correct. On everything.
Wideman sure can't make a mistake in an otherwise decent game. He made a bunch of really nice plays last night. BUT HE WENT OFFSIDE!! I also agree that there's no way Monahan isn't trying hard - it's a stick gripping issue. Great to see him pot a classic Monahan goal. I wouldn't mind in the least if Jankowski stays and Shinkaruk goes. Jankowski looked like an NHLer, created a couple chances from behind the net and made some really nice defensive plays.

If Elliott hugs the post there, Tavares has the entire other half of the net wide open to shoot at

One of my friend's kids is a midget goalie, and he describes the positioning they are taught these days a lot. It leaves holes (often high short side) but gives the best chance to save most shots.
I know if Gaudreau or Monahan tips that in off a Gio shot in OT last year, no one is saying "yeah that was lucky, Goalie X should have had it". They aer saying "whatta perfect tip".

3 on 3 was designed to make mistakes happen and to open things up.
I've been on record before saying they are fundamentally changing hockey and I don't like it.

Thanks for this. Missed the game, and came here hoping to read a bunch of discussion on Jankowski. Good or bad. Any differing opinions out there? A rookie being over 50% in the dot is impressive.

Janko was definitely a bright spot out there. Hustled hard, crashed the net, got a couple of offensive chances.
Good start to his career. Hope he pots one soon!
