Those who praise Hamilton seem to focus on two things - his age and his point totals. I guess those are indisputable but I would argue his point totals are inflated by team's style. He is certainly young but his defensive zone awareness and overall hockey sense don't seem great. Of course he can still improve but he doesn't look better than last year IMO.

He also put up 40pts in a more defensive Boston system.

One thing I think the supporters preach is patience which is hard because he is on a big money deal. Think of where Brodie, and Gio were at this age? Brodie was just breaking in with the Flames and Gio was a tweener. I really hope the Flames don't make the mistake of trading him while he flourishes elsewhere. Having said that if the deal makes sense I would be okay moving on from Dougie because the fit hasn't seemed right since he got here.

Regarding Boston's willingness to trade him:
- You just don't go out there and trade a young 6'5 defenceman that puts up 40 points......or do you? Maybe they knew what we now know....

They had to trade him because he didn't want to be there and didn't want to sign a contract. The Bruins and their fans were high on his play when he was there, but their story 180'd after the trade because it was a terrible trade for them.

They really need to add a dislike button.

Like mentioned above Boston did not want to trade him they made several attempts to sign him but he wanted to go elsewhere. The only thing "we know now" is that there are people on this board who drastically overreact and that he has been one of Calgarys better defencemen in a year where our token 1 and 2 guys have played like 5 and 6 guys.

Exactly. Just go to HF Bruins forum and dig up the Hamilton trade thread from 2015. They were losing their minds at how little they got in return for Dougie.

listening to the fan yesterday, they made a good point about how at this stage, why not simply frigin play hamilton. He's getting 3rd pairing minutes, which doesn't help him improve his game, and that isn't good if he is to a remain a flame, and that isn't good for his value should they want to move him.

What world are some of you living in where Hamilton isn't a top 4 defenseman on this team...?

Did some of you expect him to be a Norris contender? Because he's come as advertised from Boston. The only way people should be disappointed is if they had no idea what kind of player Hamilton was when we traded for him and had ridiculous expectations of him.

Every player on this team sucks and should be traded or waived because they're not as good as we want them to be. The only good players this team has ever had are the ones that were traded or waived and are on other teams now...

CP is far more entertaining than Flames games.

The same world where Sean Monahan isn't a high end centre thanks to a bad start, even though he has 3 consecutive seasons of growth. A bad 16 games under a new (bad?) coach/system is enough to throw away 3 years of growth.

There's a third.

He pushes the play towards the other team's net, and better than any other D on this team this year.

(Incoming "this jsut proves corsi is useless!")

simple question: What team would pick up Hamilton if he was put on waivers?

for instance the Penguins are right up against the cap. The only way they can add Hamilton is to send the Flames MAF and sending DUMOULIN or Cole or Justin Schulltz to the minors or to the Flames. They would need the extra 1M of cap relief to bring in a backup goalie for Murray.

The Yotes have 5.1 M in cap with the Pronger Bolland 7.4M LTIR . They also have OEL, Goligoski, Murphy and Stone as their top 4. Hamilton would be in the mix with Schenn and Chychrun for the 5/7 spot.and would be their highest paid d-man. I could not see Tippett giving Hamilton any more ice time.

There would be a very short list which would quickly establish that any trade would be termed as a salary dump.

I'm not a huge Hamilton fan, but what's going to replace him if he leaves?

Aside from Gio and Brodie, the Flames D looks pretty pathetic. Kulak looks like he could be a good one down the road, but he's a rookie. Engellund has looked great so far, but at the end of the day he'll always be a bottom pairing guy. Same with Jokipakka - decent player, but on a good team he's a bottom pairing guy. I don't even want to discuss Wideman.

The D depth on this team at the moment is pretty awful. They've got some solid young guys in the wings, but if you're looking at putting together a decent team now, the D core is bad.

To provide a simple answer: virtually every team that is able to clear enough cap space for him.

Of course, this is an utterly ridiculous question because Dougie Hamilton will never get waived at this point in his career.

...Nope. You'll not bring me down. You would think 'Cartman in a Flames jersey' would tip more people off.

Any team that has the cap space would grab him off waivers. Free 23yr old consecutive 40 pt defenseman... yeah if you can cover his contract you take that.

FYI: there was some chatter about this on local Vancouver radio this AM with Bob MacKenzie. There could be something to this, but MacKenzie admitted that he has no idea if the Flames are actually shopping Hamilton.

Not sure if being labelled a top 4 defenceman on this team is an insult to Dougie or a compliment. We can talk about his 40 points all we want but I would take non-flashy defensive stud player 10/10 times before offensively minded defencemen. Its the same argument people make that put Karlsson ahead of Doughty. Doughty is ahead by miles IMO - defence wins championships
