Favorite for me was Peter Maher. Didn't have a TV growing up so listened to all the games on 66CFR. Pete was the best. Fell asleep many a night listening to call games on the west coast. Also liked Ed Whalen the odd time I was able to catch a game on TV. ("Put it out in front! Oh, they score!") Don Whittman was great back then, too. Nowadays, there's not anyone I REALLY like, although Rick Ball and Kelly Hrudey are pretty good. Can't stand Hughson and Simpson, though.
My worst isn't even hockey related. In Sask for Rider games, we're stuck with the unfortunate duo of Rod Petersen and Carm Carteri. These guys are the absolute worst PBP team I've ever heard. When I first moved out here, I thought it was a joke the first time I tuned in and caught their little act. No, it wasn't a joke. They are the biggest homers out there, openly cheering the Riders, calling players by their first names only ("Darian with a pass....."). Carm is the worst color guy in the world, moaning and groaning when things don't go the Riders' way (which has been alot the past few years). Petersen isn't much better and comes off like a jerk sometimes.
Thank your lucky stars, Flames fan. It recently came out here that after Peter Maher retired, Rod Petersen was all set to be the next Flames PBP radio guy. Some personal matters got in the way and the Flames rescinded their employment offer. He might have been okay paired with his buddy Peter Loubardias (who comes on Petersen's sports talk show ever Thursday at 4:30 to talk Flames and hockey), but he's openly professed to hating the Flames. I shudder to think of him being Peter Maher's successor.
