Every now and then a non-skilled player is named captain. But in the NHL it's usually the best players on the ice. I like to think it serves as a marketing endeavour more than anything. Look at today's announcement: it looked like a model photo shoot more than any sort of parliamentary voting system amongst players.
I don't think the locker room is the Mighty Ducks or Slapshop movie you think it is. It's the coach, assistant coaches, medical staff, and support staff doing their jobs like a business. There's no hanging your heads after a period waiting for a motivational speech from your captain.

As someone who tries to defend the Oilers here and there, this move is incredibly stupid.

I feel bad for their fans. They've always been good to me as a visiting Jets fan, and they are loyal to a horrible product for so long now.

This might actually be why. Make the guy who can't easily develop that attitude of putting partying ahead of the team the leader, and hope the rest of that mess follows.
If nothing else, that would represent a departure from the last "leadership" group.

Why are you surprised? The kid has not even played a full season of NHL hockey. The Oilers are notorious for rushing their players, and this screams desperation. The best choice would have been to just name alternates at this time. Let him mature and grow without the weight of a C on his shoulders. This, simply put, comes as no surprise as it is the Oilers and this move is right up their alley.

Why are you using black text?
I'm surprised because the rest of the hockey world seems to think this is a great move. McDavid has been under a microscope since he was 14 years old. He has proven that he thrives under expectations. He isn't being rushed in any way, shape, or form. It's obvious he is the future of the team. Give him the ball and let him run with it. I don't think any NHL team wants to go two years without a captain and there is quite clearly no other choice on that roster

Well he was such a great captain for team NA, I'm sure he'll accomplish just as much with Edmonton.
McLellan's face just appears dumber and dumber to me the more I see of him. I see a lot of Kevin Lowe in his demeanor and just overall intelligence (or lack thereof).

Your final sentence is why this is so ridiculous. It's not a criticism of McDavid, but of the Oilers, and the fact that 11 years into this rebuild, they are so utterly lacking in leadership that they named a bare teenager their captain. McDavid becoming the youngest captain in NHL history is not an achievement. It is an indictment against the Oilers incompetence.

How exactly has he proven this? The only meaningful success that McDavid has ever attained was a good underage performance on a winning WJC entry on a stacked team.

This is probably the right answer. On a site full of Flames fans there's not going to be an objective opinion, and the media are usually trying to sell audience, so they aren't going to trash Oilers fans, which is a lot of customers in a market of only 7 Canadian teams.
This was just as much of a business decision as it was a hockey one. It's easily the best possible business decision

Even though his team lost to Oshawa, he's the most decorated player in OHL history.

I acknowledge I am probably in the minority but the Oiler bashing wears me out. I will be happy when the season starts and the results can speak for themselves.

Can't wait.

The fact that they made sure to make McDavid captain two days before Landeskog became the Avs captain shows they had ulterior motives.
It also shows just how much that team is hanging all their hopes on this kid. What's going to happen when they go through another decade of incompetence? Will the city still support him?

I don't know whats more disturbing for Oiler fans: having a player with under 50 nhl games as captain or not having any other player on the team more qualified to be captain.

The only way someone could feel bad for their fans is if they'd spent the last 6 summers in a coma and missed the hype train circle jerks.

Lol can the oilers ever do anything where they don't look like complete idiotic clowns?
Anybody see that video of those 4 dolts coming out from behind the sliding door to back street boys music?
Haha
They make something as simple as announcing a captain completely awkward and easy to poke fun at.

How can you be the most decorated without a Memorial Cup or an OHL championship? Seems to me that should be a prerequisite to being crowned "the most decorated player in OHL history".
Haven't looked at it too in depth because my care level is quite low, but Hall must be up there for that title. He won the Memorial Cup two years in a row!
