It sounds like Subban is a great guy (off the ice for sure), he also is a great personality for the game, and no one can deny is an incredible talent. It also seems like he is probably not "intentionally" an issue in the locker room. What is sounds like, is that he simply hasn't figured out that he may need to adapt some of the things he does, in order to create a better result for his team, despite how counter intuitive they may seem to him. I bet with every decision he has made where he's seemed defiant (to his team mates and coaches) he's truly had the best intentions for his team at heart.....but none the less they were still a mistake.
What the difference is at the NHL level, is that he is such a talent, that you are constantly looking at what I said above, versus all the good his raw talent creates, and you are trying to figure out whether you are better off enduring it, or moving on. For the Canadiens, based on the return they got and their team, they clearly finally decided to move on from him.
At a team Canada level, best on best team, you don't end up in that debate, because there are so many "game breakers" already on the roster, who also don't have an issue with their decision making that leaving a Subban off the roster is a far easier task than it would be for an NHL squad. You don't need his game breaking ability as badly, and the next in line is such a quality player that it makes the choice easy.
