^That would be surprising to me. He seemed quite happy to leave at the trade deadline.
Extra vets in camp can't hurt though.

Oh dear christ....no. I appreciated his efforts, but I am 100% ready to move on from Jones.

Taking a while to get to 5000

I don't get why they'd sign a guy they just finished a 3 season look at for a PTO. If all you need is an extra body, you could get anyone. Unless they like him but want to try and get him at a fraction of his last de.....ah poop

Personally, I'd like to move on from guys like David Jones. He had his moments for sure, but they were so few and far in between. Maybe Higgins has a resurgence and earns a spot, but I also couldn't care less about his PTO either.

Similar to the Higgins' signing - this is probably just as much about being able to fill out pre-season rosters as it is giving the guy a chance.
Nothing wrong with a PTO.

Guys calm down, we have players in the World Cup. Need PTO's to fill rosters for the pre-season.

I would rather a young fringe player play in the pre-season. I've seen enough of the Higgins and Jones's of the world to know they're unlikely to make this roster let alone make any kind of contributions.

I have no problem with any PTOs. Higher competition is always good. And if any of them force their way onto the team, then it means they look great.

This is just the Flames contingency planning for giving Johnny some time off after the World Cup.
His back is going to be tired from carrying his team and his arms are likely going to be weary from relentlessly hoisting that cumbersome trophy.

i think this is a few things, firstly, need vets to fill in for the pre-season games with several guys away for the world cup.
Secondly, doing the guy a solid, where the PTO isn't just for the flames, it also gives 29 other teams a view of what he still has left.

Yeah, remember that time they gave Douglas Murray a PTO? What an unmitigated disaster that turned out to be. What the hell was Treliving thinking??

We need 2 full rosters worth of players for the start of training camp.
Also need competition so prospects aren't just given a roster spot.

Or Ryan Wilson last year. He looked pretty solid during camp and pre-season, but eventually lost out to Brett Kulak.
Maybe the extra competition spurred Kulak on.

Man, what a strange twist of fate that would be. Jones looked quite happy to be out of Calgary when he was dealt last year. But, I guess beggers can't be choosers at this time of year.

I should clarify I guess. My comment isn't anti-PTO for any player, I'm just really, really tired of watching David Jones play. I wanted to see some fresh blood.

The league requires teams to play a certain number of vets in the preseason. So teams pick up the PTO types so that they can meet these minimums even with players away at the World Cup or to let other vets rest in the early part of preseason.
