whatever the hell this is would be my vote for getting dumped from the Olympics.
As bizarre as race walking is its been in the Olympics since 1904 and has a clear winner, I'd grandfather it in myself.
Personally I think the Olympics should be able to fit into two buildings, a pool and a stadium, no team sports, nothing that requires an ocean lake or river etc

So this thread is really "sports that Taco Vidal hates", right?
The common theme in OP is, of course, sports that wealthy elite can afford to play.
So I guess ice hockey is gone too.
Lots of sports are expensive especially when kids get older and compete at an elite level. Swimming and gymnastics are two that I can speak to that are not cheap.
Activities such as equestrian take these expenses to another level if you start competing at an elite level.
Modern pentathalon is probably the best example of how the cost is unaffordable to almost anyone but the upperclass.
I mean, if any of us were actually making these comments seriously, this would be a valid thought, but this entire thread has pretty much been a joke from the start. As such, a silly thread has spawned a series of silly archetypal jokes about olympic athletics, and part of that joke has been an old world mentality towards women's athletics. Anyone actually taking this seriously has a broken humor meter or a broken sarcasm detector.
Perhaps it's not your particular brand of humor, but let's not run in here acting like the censorship police.
I get that people don't think foxy boxing or pole dancing should be Olympic events. They're not serious, they're kidding. These types of female-demeaning comments are socially acceptable. I'm saying that's part of the problem.
Your argument also doesn't fly. A joke about old world mentality towards women would be a comment about how cooking and cleaning (traditional female 'household' roles) should be Olympic events, since javelin and shooting (traditional male 'hunter' roles) are. Saying foxy boxing and female pillow fight should be events says nothing about old world mentality. It only elicits women in a sexualized manner. Haha -- women should perform sexualized events for my pleasure. You're right, I don't get the joke.
People learned not to use the n-word to refer to blacks. People learned not to use the word 'gay' to refer to something silly / inferior. These are terms that subconsciously breed intolerance and homophobia. I think its time that our culture no longer accepts flippant comments that reduce women to sexualized objects. "I'd f--- that" "I want to do ____ to her". I completely understand that it doesn't seem like a big deal to make comments like this. That's the way our culture is. But I think it needs to change, so I feel a need to speak up. We celebrate the objectification of women. That's a not a message that should be thrown around so casually in society, and it comes with much deeper societal consequences.

Agreed. And yet, at the same time, modern pentathalon is the quintessential Olympic sport. The entire modern movement was built upon Victorian principles of amateur sport. And at the time, only the wealthy elite could afford to play as amateurs. That was sort of the point. The rich made the common man pay for the privilege of watching his betters compete.
So in that vein, I support retaining it, given the sport today basically exists as a mockery of those principles.
I think all the sports should in some way represent survival - hunting, fighting, running, etc. Any sport that requires a judge to pick the winners is IMO really stretching it. If you are going to have figure skating, might as well include American Idol.

Any sport which prepares your hoplites for standing in the phalanx, you mean?

Unfortunately, there is a lot of opinions on some sports that people know nothing about.
I currently coach a Modern Pentathlon club down at the Talisman Centre and I can tell you that our membership fees are some of the cheapest for any sport in the city.
For International competition, Horse jumping is only done when you're over 18 yrs of age. Obviously, previous jumping experience is needed but it isn't the main focus of training at the younger ages.
Beach volleyball has really grown on me. I thought it was dumb at first, but it is actually one of the better spectator sports for the Olympics IMO. Same with rugby. Not that I thought it was dumb, but it is fun to watch. American football has nothing on it.

Well my original post was about the Olympics and I still contend that to train and compete at that level wouldnt be financially accessible to most people.
And taking out equestrian is likley taking out the most expensive of the sports but then you dont have pentathlon, youve got fourthlon. Not sure what to call it as there is quadrathlon.
Edit: I wanted to add that I am really talking about the Olympics here. I actually love a lot of niche sports. If people want to pay to compete and others want to pay to watch or to sponsor, then great. I swim at Talisman Centre sometimes and one of the oddest sports I see is underwater hockey. But I find it awesome that people train and compete in this sport.

Agreed, blows my mind speed walking is even a thing let alone an Okympic sport. It's literally: see who's the fastest at the most ineffective movement technique you can think of.
It would be the equivalent of swimming including the dodgy paddle with life jackets on. It's stupid.

Pretty disgraceful some posters don't understand this is a discussion about Olympics.
Right now, it's socially acceptable for men to make these flippant comments that demean and objectify women. That's not right, and its more harmful than people realize.
Good for you if you fantasize about women performing sexualized acts for your pleasure. This isn't the forum to share those feelings. Go to 4chan. Or forums.womenareobjectsformyviewingpleasure.com. Or keep your thoughts to yourself.
Oh? Did you miss the entrance of Tonga at the Opening Ceremonies?
