I suspect part of why the negotiations are taking so long is at least two-fold:

1. These guys aren't all sitting in a room together trying to hash this out. Treliving is in Calgary running the team, Monahan is in Toronto working out and Johnny's location is unknown (at least to me, my guess would be back in the Philly area?).

Furthermore, Tre isn't communicating directly with the players. He's communicating with the agents that communicate with the players that communicate back to the agents and then back to Tre. This process of telephone is probably going to take a while, especially since they all have other things going on. Monahan and Gaudreau are working out a ton, the agents have other clients as well and Tre has a team to run, which means meeting with his management staff, time spent looking into other FA signings as depth, etc.

None of this is out of the ordinary, but the reality is that they all have other aspects to their life/job that are not directly tied to this contract negotiation however important this contract is.

2. We, for the most part, are looking at this contract based on two factors term and AAV. However, when negotiating the actually contracts, not only are they talking about term and AAV, but they have to figure out how much of that money gets paid in what years. How much of that money is salary version bonuses. Of the bonus money what is performance and what is signing bonus.

What about MNC/NTC? In what years should a MNC or MTC clause be included? What are the stipulations of said clauses?

There are a ton of moving parts in these contracts.

I suspect (although I have no direct evidence to support this) that they've landed on the term and AAV a long time ago, but all the little details of the contract are still being worked out through this telephone game between GM, agent, and player as they work around all the other duties they have going on on any given day.

On Philly Sports Radio, Gaudreau Talks Contract and Idea of One Day Playing Closer to Home
On contract negotiations:

Quote:
"They don't bring up the round I was drafted in. They just bring up things throughout my season that I've done well and things that I haven't done well. There's two sides to it. My agent's side and then the Flames side. We're right in the middle of that right now. It's been good. We're inching along here a little bit, as the summer goes on. I know my GM was really busy, he was at the World Championships and he had the draft and free agency and now player development camp just got over. So the rest of the summer, he can calm down a little bit and we can work on (the contract) a little bit more."

Here's what he said about that.

Quote:
"It's hard to say cause I'm right in the middle of a contract right now and Calgary's been so great to me but obviously, playing in your own country and playing close to the East Coast and playing close to your family is something that sounds really great at times. I think a lot of players like to play in their own country."

"It would be a lot easier for my family and friends to be able to watch a few games in their own time zone instead of two time zones away. I remember last year in the playoffs, my parents are like, ‘We're getting to bed at 1 and 2 in the morning, we're so jacked up from the game. How are we supposed to go to bed when we don't fall asleep until 4 a.m.!’ I'm like, I'm sorry it's far, far away. But it was a great first few seasons and I know they enjoyed it."

In Tampa I think the players have bought in a little taking a little less so they can keep more players. Obviously the tax system helps their cause a great deal.

The one thing that for the next little while benefits Calgary is getting paid in US dollars stretches that salary a little bit in Calgary. I think that makes up any perceived discount they may give. Gio starts his 6.75 contract which will be closer to 8m Canadian with the CDN dollar where it is.

If this isn't done within a week it will irritate the hell out of me. The market has been established. You now have enough comparables to have a pretty good idea of exactly where Monahan and Gaudreau should be.

Johnny's sister liked my tweet announcing my Flames OT Wins video that I called "Basically a Johnny Gaudreau special."

Yay.
