But ya, it may be out of context, or just poorly worded. They rest of the crew was snickering when Button mentioned Hall.

This was a good tweet by Bruce Arthur:
Deterrence is a nice idea, and Milan Lucic is tough as hell, but Marc Savard's career was ended on a roster that included Lucic and Chara.

I dont know, 1.5 more than Brouwer (plus a couple yrs and NMC)
if I were to choose, its not that much different
Lucic is younger and I think he is a much better player despite the pile on plus he has that size and a nasty side ... maybe more than Brouwer
Its the NMC that makes it close otherwise Id be a bit envious

Quoting myself - but Lucic was also on the ice when Savard got cheapshotted and his career ended.

Dude its really bad. Its long, its expensive it has a full 7 year NMC so they can't get rid of his contract easily.
He's a 20-25 goal guy who's slower then dirt going uphill. The Oilers have become a fairly slow team over the last few years.
As well if JP doesn't make the team, it doesn't matter because ready or not they have to play him or else they have a pretty weak top 6 McDavid or not.
This was a panic move by Chia, there's no question that he was feeling pressure after getting his underwear torn off in the Hall trade.
The Oilers still have a underwhelming blueline without a true top pairing guy. Their top 6 in my mind is weaker today then it was last week, and they're heading into cap hell.
They're still going to have to over pay for a defenseman and if they pick up Barrie they add another 6 million dollar guy who might not be worth 6 million.
Chia has almost well and truly borked the Oilers within the next 3 years, and this contract didn't help.

Terrible deal. Ha ha ha ha. They are immediately better but this will cost them one of their best young players in the coming years.

That stats guy on the fan frames things nicely. There aren't good and bad contracts when they are signed. It's about risk. This contract has a ton of risk

Probably but I bet they don't care and consider those guys lost causes and would trade another one if they can do it this offseaon. Lowe hand tied that organization so tightly with his shady tactics that only getting bent over can start to get them out now. McClellan rants last year made that clear without a doubt.

Awe poor oilers fan. I hate to break it to you but they were snickering because he's right. They were laughing at the oilers ineptitude.

The Oilers basically have a two-year window to accomplish a couple things
- Try to be competitive when McD is still on his entry
- Convince him not to sign a massive offer sheet in 2 years.
This contract is as much about that latter point than the former

So I've been watching, but late to CP.
This was stupid. All around stupid.
There was all of one team that offered him this contract. The Edmonton Oilers. All 29 other teams didnt even entertain a contract this ludicrous.
It'll probably work out for a bit, $6M isnt outrageous. But this is Khabibulin/Ference/Ridiculous Hossa/Jagr offers all over again.
"We got him! Granted, we had to pay more than anyone else by a huge margin, but we got him!"
At the same time they shipped out Taylor Hall a 24 year old ~70 point winger on a $6M/7 to bring in a 28 year old ~50 point winger?
Sure, Larsson is in there too but....Larsson. Solves few to no Oiler needs.
Say what you want about Chiarelli, but this is no different than MacT and Lowe's 'Big Game Hunting.'
Absolutely no awareness on how to build a team.

I kind of hope the Devils sign Jason Demers now. Can you imagine the Devils coming out of this with Hall/Demers while the Oil are stuck with Lucic/Larsson? Lol

Yeah, the McDavid ELC is their window now, I'm not sure they realize it yet. They really might as well go all in on a D men and go for it the next two years.

I recall rumours about a chronic wrist problem when he was in Boston but I don't remember hearing about this in L.A.

I really think this could have been a Brad Richards-like scenario for Edmonton. One of those deals they would have looked back on in two years and say "best thing never to have happened to us".
Oh well.

Other than Montreal, which apparently offered more $$$

That's true. Not so bad for the first year or two, but all downhill from there. Post-apex player, in Feaster parlance. I admit I actually haven't watched him play too much the past couple of years.
