The other thing that is missing here is the high liklihood that the concourse will likley have slots as well. It is Vegas and everywhere you turn there are slot machines. So even for the three hours of a game I would expect that there will be plenty of money made off of gambling right on the spot.

Put me in the corner of 2 expansion teams or none at all. just move Carolina to Vegas and have 15 teams per conference. In a couple of years move Florida to Quebec and Phoenix to Portland/Kansas City.

NHL really needs to be careful on relos and franchise sales though. Can't charge $500 million and then let Quebec group buy the Hurricanes for $200 million. You can charge a relo fee but you need to protect that franchise value.

When all said and done, it could be no expansion team actually pays $500 million.
I think it is different if Carolina, and the ownership group there, decides to move the franchise rather than a sale. I wouldn't be surprised to see Carolina and Quebecor become partners in the hockey club, and the team moved to Quebec City. It's a win-win all around. Quebec gets a team, Carolina gets a new building, the current owners get an opportunity to make some profit before selling out to Quebecor down the road, and the NHL maintains its conference balance. Las Vegas then can't complain about the expansion fee as it would be a member club making a decision, and then seeking approval from the BoG. This will also help all parties meet their goals, and league goals, as quickly as possible. I really feel the NHL wants to be the first major league to have a team in Las Vegas. If they really want that, they have to grant Vegas a team this year and get them operational for 2017-18, otherwise the NFL may just beat them to the punch.

That sounds like a pretty good solution.

Why does it matter if it's an odd number? There might be 2-3 nights all year when the NHL has all 30 teams playing (could be wrong on that). Either way it won't matter.

If it happens, I think this is not something that occurs any more than once a year.

So it does look like Vegas gets a team and I honestly think this will bode well for the Flames in the goalie department. A lot of teams will be looking to get something for a goalie they'd potentially lose for nothing. I think BT will make this work for the team somehow.

Interesting scenario. The price that Quebecor pays for an ownership interest in The franchise would be of great interest to any potential new owners of an expansion franchise.

I am not sure how every team plays 82 games when there is an odd amount of teams. This is the only thing that i can see that matters.

The NHL had an odd number of teams (21) for 12 seasons. It's not a problem.

With the lawsuit being dropped on Karmanos I would think anything north of $150M for a minority share seems reasonable. I would also think that there would be clauses in there for a move to QC, and the right of to buy out Karmanos at a later date. That would work for all parties I would think.

It makes scheduling a bit of a pain.

In the 21-team NHL, the Smythe, Adams and Norris Divisions played intradivisional teams eight times, and the other three divisions three times.

The Patrick, however, played intradivisional opponents six or seven times, rotating each year.

It's something that can be worked around, obviously, but is not ideal.

They had 21 teams for how long? Why is 31 any different other than it being a prime number?

I thought the Patrick teams played each other 7 times, rotating only the extra home game. Each team played 35 intra-division games, plus 45 against the rest. The other divisions played 32 intra-division games, plus 48 against the rest. I remember being quite young at the time, obsessed with hockey, and thinking, "Whoah... that worked out quite well".

I'm sure the hassles of scheduling an odd number of teams are relatively minor compared to building a $500M team from the ground up in a market that is not ready.

That's a lot of money invested just to ensure a balanced schedule.

Yeah, you're right. I got lazy. The other three divisions played 16 out of division teams, or 48 games a season. The Patrick would have had 15 out of division teams, or 45 games.

In some ways, an odd number of teams can make scheduling easier because teams have an even number of opponents. The first few years when there were 21 teams, the league played a completely balanced 80 game schedule with 4 games each against the other 20 teams.

If finalized, the Flames are in big trouble..

Exposing one of Brodie, Giordano, Hamilton and having to retain Wideman.

Alex Burrows (NHLPA Board Member) gave a bunch of news about the expansion to Jean-Charles Lajoie of 91.9 sport in Montreal
https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comm...ews_about_the/

Quote:
Governors reunion will take place on June 8th and the vote should pass.

Las Vegas team will be announced on June 22 in Las Vegas. Las Vegas team will be there in 17-18

Vegas team will have as much chance as the 28th team to get the first pick at the 2017 draft. Meaning that the lowest they can get is 6th overall.

Any players in to their 2 first years of entry level contract will not be exposed to the expansion draft.

Players that didn't play at least 40 games or a cumulative of 70 games in the NHL are not available for the expansion draft.
Las Vegas will have to draft at least one player from each team.

Players with no-trade clause will be available to be drafted.

Players with a non-movement clause will NOT be available to be drafted.

Team will have the choice to protect either 6 forward, 2 defensmen, 1 goalie OR 7 forwards, 1 denfensman and 1 goalie.

No signs of Quebec for now but players are pushing for the Nordiques to come back.
EDIT: Miscommunication on quote "8 skaters and 1 goalie, or 7 forwards, 3 defensemen and 1 goalie"

ROFL @ 6-2-1 or 7-1-1

FU NHL

...and if one of those 2 has to be Wideman the NHL can go to hell.
