Last week she opened the locked bathroom door while I was on the crapper. She used a toy butter knife from her playroom. Apparently she couldn't wait to get herself a hair tie because soccer was starting soon. She turned four a few weeks ago. Nothing wrong with her mental capacities, judgment, or even climbing ability. Thanks.

You took your eyes off her while you were in the crapper??? She could have burned the house down. Irresponsible parent!

I honestly wonder what all these people would think about how most nations in the EU and especially nordic nations our kids run around pretty free of supervision from pretty early ages. Clearly tons of horrible parents out here.

Some of the vitriol for the mother on the internets is certainly over the top for sure. I think people are getting a mental image of her sitting on a bench oblivious to anything around her while she posts an "AT THE ZOO!!!!!" Facebook update/selfie on her phone or something. I highly doubt that's the case, sounds like she was overwhelmed with too many kids to watch. Kids get away from people all the time, for sure. It happens. But at the same time, people saying the mother deserves ZERO blame are taking it too far in the other direction.

No the woman shouldn't be locked up in jail or fined hundreds of thousands of dollars, etc, the rage is over the top. I totally get how a kid slipping away happens, like many people are echoing, which helps people relate to and humanize the mother more. But that fact doesn't remove fault from said parent either if the kid ends up doing something bad once they slip away.

If you take your kids to a department store, one of them gets away from you for a minute & ends up knocking over a display and breaking merchandise, the parent is going to be seen as at fault. So why would this incident be any different? The "kids get away from parents all the time" excuse isn't going to get you off the hook with the manager at HBC if your kid runs off, jumps on a couch for sale and ends up breaking it, so I don't understand why it would in this situation. Especially considering said actions resulted in the death of an endangered animal.

Its like the word accident has no meaning anymore. We must blame people.

You might be confusing accident with act of god. No one is to blame when lighting burns your house down. But accidents usually have a cause that can be blamed on someone or an otherwise avoidable set of circumstances.

Nope, this was an accident. The mother said her son had his hand in her pocket, when she realized it was gone, she turned around and could not find him.

He did something no one has done in 38yrs at that zoo, took her eyes away for a short time and the kid did something no one thought possible before. It was an accident, kids get away from parents all the time and we don't threaten them with death threats or call them bad parents, we accept that we cannot 100% guarantee ever the safety of our children in any way shape or form.

The zoo will now make changes to the enclosure, others will take note I'm sure to avoid other accidents like this in the future.

Blaming her is just stupid, this stuff happens to all parents but one out of millions ends up in some tragedy like this.

And people wonder why fewer and fewer people are having kids.

I hadn't really read much about this because it's depressing. But I think you're going to end up being wrong. The fence was three feet tall. In a review of its safety last March, the Association of Zoo's and Aquariums found that "Insufficient barrier fencing" was a risk to patrons.

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-oh...-idUSKCN0YL1RC

If the zoo doesn't change a single thing, then I guess it won't be their fault. But I highly suspect a super cage is going to be built in the very near future. And seriously...a three foot fence?

Off topic, but feels appropriate for where this thread went. I decided to head to Marlborough Mall for the first time in like 10 years for kicks this weekend. Some dude outside the entrance, probably in his late 40s, was smoking a cigarette and said "f*** you, you f***in' chink, or whatever the f*** you are."

I actually LOL'ed and said "you're stellar, dude", of which he responded "f*** off". It was so out-of-date and wacky that I was more amused than offended. Good ol' Marlborough Mall. Never change.

Because we don't need them to plant and tend to the crops and cows we need to survive the winter.
