I hate the situation and I hate that they were able to isolate it to Calgary interviews, but I get it.

I'm sure that's his excuse, but he's full of it. Insiders manage to go on the radio in all sports all over North America but somehow this one guy on the Calgary radio station is having his relationships ruined.
He just doesn't want to do it. Which is fine. Let's not pretend that people who listen to the Calgary radio station act any differently than every other radio station in the world.

I disagree. Friedman is one of the most credible insiders. He actually has contacts - and has to protect them. Bobby Mac is the same way.
If he has traced this issue to some listeners in Calgary - that sucks - but I understand why he would have to walk away.

From his latest 30 thoughts, which has a ton of great stuff in it about the draft and recent trades. But on this specific topic:
This is a one-time only rant from me in this column, but here it is: My days of doing this stuff are over, except for what I’m contractually-obligated to do. Content aggregators have ruined it for everyone. Few stories get broken on radio because it’s just not set up for that as easily as Twitter or TV or our company websites. We go on radio to have a conversation, to expand on a story, to shoot the breeze, to talk like we would over beers at a bar. It’s spit-balling. But, these content thieves turn it into hard news, which it isn’t. It’s ridiculous and not worth the aggravation.

That's too bad. Always found Freidge's spots on the Fan the best segments to listen to. Probably getting some heat from his NHL contacts that people are quoting him on rumours when he's really just spitballing with Boomer and the gang.

What content thieves is he talking about exactly?
I'm not sure I understand what actually happened.

I respect Friedman, but this is partially his fault.
If he actually prepared for these radio segments instead of doing them as an after thought while he was running errands, he probably wouldn't say things that could be misconstrued as actual rumors instead of conjecture. Or how about just not go there.
The TSN insider guys do radio segments every weekday and the same content aggregators transcribe their sessions, but none of them have gotten into the trouble Friedman has.

It's ridiculous snd Sportsnet take note... McKenzie and Dreger do hits on TSN radio. You've all but destroyed the television deal and now you're sacrificing radio.

Do the TSN guys get paid to be on the radio? Pretty sure they do and Friedman doesn't so that could have something to do with him not being prepared. Which is probably why he wants to quit doing them instead of spending a lot of time on something he doesn't get paid for and then get into trouble to top it all off.

Friedman should be fired if he is not going to do his job. Lavoie sucks, Johnson is mediocre. Sportsnet needs to get a new insider or two.

I listen to 960 so I'm entitled to my butthurt opinion on the station. Their appeal drops significantly without Friedman hits. They really miss Warrener too.

Nobody wants to hear Friedman do the soundbites that Dreger and McKenzie do. The great thing about Friedman's spots was the unscripted nature and juicy off the cuff stuff. Dreger and McKenzie go on and say the same stuff they say on TV almost word for word. Friedman doesn't want to do it and doesn't have to do it. So I'm not sure why people feel they're entitled to it

It is not even that hard to prepare.
All he has to do is e-mail a brief list of topics he has information on and wants to discuss to the radio host ahead of time, just talk to the points you know you have sources/inside information on.
Don't discuss anything topics you aren't ready for and if they do come up brush them off as quickly as you can and don't give up anything too controversial, unless it is sourced.
If he can't bother to do that, than yes he shouldn't be on radio doing insider segments.

What is his job? The guy is supposed to be a league "insider" and is supposed to report on rumors he hears around the league. what value is he bringing if he doesn't do this? FAN960 is Rogers property and they should have their top insiders providing listeners with rumors and discussion around the league n

Well Sportsnet should work these segments into his contract which could be the case. If they are paying you to be an insider then report news and rumors on Sportsnet radio
