Well in ROJ doesn't Vader come to the death star to speed up construction?

So it is fair to say that any major characters who aren't in A new hope but in this movie are dead by the end?

At the end of the day, they could pretty much kill most of them with extreme prejudice except for Mon Mothma, and a couple of others.
This to me has to be about a hopeless battle. I look at it as the Empire at that point being at the top of their game. Think of them as the Japanese Imperial Navy pre Midway, when they basically won every single battle.
Then Midway came along and while the Japanese still had some naval victories, you could see that they were losing their grip on the war one finger at a time until they suffered the defeat at Guadalcanal that really ended the Japanese naval threat to the pacific.
In this case the Rogue one battle would be to me like pre midway, where the rebels are going to lose and lose horribly but they manage in a heroic act to get the plans out.
The Death Star battle to me would be like Midway where the overwhelmed rebels managed to land a massive sucker punch to the Empire who started to flail around a bit. Then the events of Empire happened, and while the Empire won they didn't crush the rebels. Then the second death star battle was Guadalcanal. The end of the offensive threat of the Empire.

Yes, but also to tell the guy in charge their that the Emperor himself is going to show up. That really seems to get him motivated, I believe his exact words are "We shall double our efforts!".

"I hope so, Commander . . . for your sake. The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am."
You totally read that in James Earl Jones' voice.

There's no reason to assume so. Mon Mothma is in this but doesn't appear in the OT until Return of the Jedi.
In the opening crawl of Episode IV, it says the Rebels have won their first victory against the Empire and were able to steal the Death Star plans during the battle, so this movie should end in a victory for the Rebellion. Someone has to survive to get the plans to Princess Leia.

Nope, dummies. SW should be common knowledge, even for non-fans. The only people exempt from judgment are the sentinelese who have been isolated from the rest of mankind for 60000 years. But even they probably know the rough premise of Rogue One.

But it could be someone getting the transmission out before Vader crushes them. Everyone dies but the mission succeeds.
There is going to be a scene when the guy who comes up with the plan says "this is is suicide mission, I can't order you to come with me"

Disney only needs one reason - $$$$$
They spent $4 billion on the rights to use these characters and they are going to milk it for every penny - see Marvel Cinematic Universe for an example.
As long as the movies are good/entertaining then I have no real issue with it.

Ugh reading your post I just had this image of all the Star Wars characters stuck in some cold steel factory hooked up to 'milking' machines just being pumped dry with a sinister Mickey walking along the stalls (prison cells) laughing and steepling his fingers.
Han looks over at Mickey and mumbles "kill.. meeee..ee..e...." to which Mickey responds in a hushed voice "Never." and slams his cell shut while laughing like the Joker.
