Throwing Barkov aside for a moment, I'm a little surprised by the sudden narrative Monahan is not only poor defensively at the moment but won't be anything more than above average long term, maybe.

Barkov is having a better year right now so no surprise that many fans will deeh him better. What have you done for me lately.
For what it is worth I think they are extremely comparable players and anyone saying that one is CLEARLY better than the other is over-reaching.
They are comparable players for sure but Barkov was the better prospect going into the draft and IMO he's probably considered a better player than Monahan today although it's very close. One thing Barkov will have to shake is that he's been injury prone while Monahan has been consistently healthy and that does make a difference over a career. Monahan has had a bit of a down season but I'm not too down on him as he's still a young player and his best days are ahead.
To me it has nothing to do with what have you done for me lately. Barkov was rated higher than Monahan in every pre-draft ranking, and it looks like he's going to fulfill his potential.
Yup that's fair. I think the question about Barkov was what his offense would be at the NHL level. Looks like it will be just fine. I would probably agree he is a better player - but I think the narrative that its not even close, or a clear slam dunk, is a reach.
As usual some people (not you) are choosing to argue on the extremes.

I totally buy that the two are close comparables. Independent commentators have said it, and the amount of people on this thread saying either that (or the equal number of people arguing that one is way better than the other) confirms it for me.
Should Monahan's recent mediocre (I won't call it bad) play affect his contract? Maybe, but I'm more concerned about what he'd do going forward, and I have a fair degree of confidence in his ability to shrug off a slump.
Warrener, who is a pretty tough marker IMO, said he'd be ecstatic if Monahan signed the same contract as Barkov.
One thing I have learned from Jokinen and Bouwmeester is to never overrate Florida players. Now someone would probably point out that it is dumb argument as neither Jokinen nor Bouwmeester have anything to do with Barkov. But they do. This examples show that big, fast young top 3 draft picks tend to be overrated, while smaller, slower, older, lower drafted players tend to be underrated for their strong sides are not as immediately obvious.
Florida is tax free too I think. So we may have to add a bit to make it a comparable contract
The tax angle is definately a Florida advantage as the Lighting can offer a lower contract to Stamkos as other states and Canada will be taking taxes off his money making them have to offer more money to equal the bottom line.
George Richards @GeorgeRichards
.@Barkovsasha95 #FlaPanthers sign C Sasha Barkov 6 years/$5.9 per; buys 2 UFA years for the 20-year-old. Presser tomorrow before #Leafs game
Looks like a benchmark for Monahan.
This Sasha Barkov sure sounds a lot like Aleksander Barkov
