Really liked Gauthier at the August camp.

Canada lost 5-4 in a shootout to CIS all stars.

McDonald admits he played poorly

Quote:
Goaltender Mason McDonald didn’t mince words after Canada lost 5-4 in a shootout to the CIS all-stars at the MasterCard Centre on Saturday night. McDonald, who knows he will be the starter in Canada’s first two games in Helsinki as Mackenzie Blackwood finishes serving a suspension, stopped 27 shots. “I’m disappointed,” McDonald said. “I thought I could have performed better. I’m glad I had a rough one rather than in the games that meant something.” Coach Dave Lowry didn’t mind hearing of McDonald’s personal assessment. “There is nothing wrong with a guy being hard on himself if he feels like he can perform better,” Lowry said ... The message from Hockey Canada staff has been that age does not matter, and there was Julien Gauthier proving as much against the CIS. Gauthier, the second-youngest forward in camp and a potential first-round pick in the 2016 NHL draft, had a goal and two assists. “It doesn’t matter if I’m younger,” Gauthier said. “I am hopeful for this year. I like my chance.” At 6-foot-4, 212 pounds, Gauthier is the biggest forward in camp ... Mitchell Stephens, Travis Dermott and Anthony Beauvillier also scored for Canada ... Lowry would not confirm the starting goalie for Sunday’s game vs. the CIS, but it’s probable that Blackwood will be in net ... The players who sat out — forwards Mitch Marner, Dylan Strome, Lawson Crouse and Brayden Point and defencemen Joe Hicketts and Haydn Fleury — also could sit Sunday, Lowry said. All six are locks to make the team. Point has been nursing a shoulder injury, but would be playing if the tournament started today ... The first round of cuts are bound to happen Sunday after the game. More cuts are likely not until Canada plays a couple of exhibition games in Finland next weekend ... Defenceman Travis Sanheim missed a few shifts after slamming into the end boards but later said he was fine.
Today's game is at 10AM MT.

Woah Hickey paired with Chychrun. Maybe his chance to shine.

Pierre Luc Dubois announced as the first cut. Not really a surprise as he was a 17 year old, and they rarely get onto Team Canada.

More cuts expected today

NVM. I thought that was going to be all for FW cuts, but then I look at the roster and two or three other guys' names are missing.

Can they take 7 d men or is it only 6 for the tournament?

Canada still has 16f and 10d at camp.

Assuming they go with the traditional 13f and 7d they normally do they have to cut 3 more forwards and 3 more d-men

Yeah, I ninja edited once I noticed Strome and Marner and one other off the roster list above.

Reports are Dal Colle has looked horrible. He has struggled this season. Is this sign of busting or just a bad year?

Ouch, that's a massive blow for Dal Colle. 5th OA gets cut from two team Canada rosters?
Is there a historic precedent for this situation?

And to think of the Islanders didn't win their final regular season game in 2013-2014, they would've had Sam Bennett and we would've picked MDC (or Nick Ritchie).

Hickey is at least going to Finland

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
So Team CAN currently sits with 3 G, 9 D and 14 F going to Europe for pre-tourney games. Final roster to be set in Finland.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
I'd say there's a decent chance VAN loans Jake Virtanen to Team CAN later today. If so, CAN would have 15 F and need to cut two.

Hickey needs to survive 2 more.

Surprised by Chychrun getting cut. If the road trip doesn't go well, he might be a Flame next year.

I hope MDC figures it out, he's a great story. Deserves better.

Also on McDonald, Montembault shutout the CIS all-stars today and there was a lot of hinting the post game comments that he might be in consideration to get some starts at the WJC over McDonald.

Just trying to light a fire under McDonald or actual possibility? you decide.
