You could... but it's Smid, so why would you want to? I'd rather have Kulak play then Smid and I'd rather have Smid sit in the press box then anyone they'd call up.

It has been a 20 game sample size vs the 70 or so we saw last year. Perhaps after missing that sort of time it is taking him longer than most to re find his game. I have been as frustrated as everyone when it comes to his play on the ice however trading you Captain who has the full package in terms of on and off the ice for Hamonick is a not a trade the flames consider

If Hamonic is not much of a downgrade from peak Gio (assuming the Brodie comparisons are true) then this might be a very good move for the Flames.
I'd rather have 25 year old Brodie than 31 year old Gio playing like he played last year and then you eliminate the risk of that albatross contract.
That's just me though.

I just don't see any single possible way the Flames would even approach Gio about waiving his NMC after he signed to stay here and the organization gushed about him being the pulse of the team.
While Gio could make sense for both teams I don't see the Flames doing it due to optics. You don't trade your captain less than 2 months into the season because he is one of several players struggling on the team right now. Especially considering he just signed a huge extension to finish his career here

It might be an instance of practicality over emotion. Some teams manage the balance better than others. Sad to say, but the Flames are one of the worst when it comes to this (historically). Gio doesn't have an NTC this year, it's now or never, last year be damned. We're building for the future.

No disagreement here. It would be an absolutely ruthless move.
Ruthless but very beneficial.

Maybe the islanders want Reinhart back?
Eberle seems to make a lot of sense. The isles could then move Okposo for D (Russell?)

I'm pretty sure he doesn't have an NMC right now, it kicks in on his new deal. If the Flames want to move Giordano, or think they will want to in the future... this season is the time to do it.

Funny - last year I asked if posters thought they'd trade Gio for the number one (McDavid) pick. Quite a few said no.

A few more, but surprisingly close to 50/50. This was at about 20 games and at that time Gio was playing at MVP level and the hype wasn't as intense around McDavid.

The hype for Gio was huge, but so was his drop in play this season.
If he was in his mid twenties, the drop in play wouldn't be so scary. As a 31 year old who is signed to a massive contract, it is.

Wideman (1/2 salary this year and next) plus hudler.
Cheap offensive defenceman for this year and next and a top 6 forward for playoffs this year.

Travis Hamonic requests trade. Western Canada preferred destination
Suddenly Travis Hamonic is one of the best young defenders in the game. I must have missed that memo before today.
That said, that video on losing his father absolutely tore me apart, that was gut-wrenching. That young man is certainly someone I would love to cheer for in a Flames jersey.
