If Stamkos were available for Bennett + Hudler, Flames should take it. Players like STamkos are not readily available. I suspect Tampa will want more in return. Stamkos is only 25 and is a proven superstar whereas, with all due respect, Bennett is a rookie/prospect with only a handful of NHL games. Stamkos is a proven leader who led the Bolts to the cup final. He would certainly change the dynamics of the Flames overnight.

What is so difficult to understand about Stamkos being a pending UFA?
He'll either leave in July, or get a stupid contract that the Flames shouldn't be giving to anyone right now.

Would agree with you of Stamkos wasn't a UFA at years end. If there's a contract included, then yes. Otherwise the Flames are overpaying

The deal would have to be contingent on an extension. Way too risky without that obviously.

If Tampa signs him then why would they trade him?
The Flames would have to take a gamble on the hopes that we can sign him. Can we? I dunno.

Or would we put Stamkos on the wing and make what is without a doubt the best line in the NHL in Gaudreau - Monahan - Stamkos?
|
You spread the the love and have a deadly 1-2 punch of Stamkos - Monahan down the middle.
I'm assuming a trade like this would have Backlund also going the other way for cap reasons?
Stamkos (9.5 - 11) assumed new contract value
Monahan (5.75 - 6.5) assumed new contract value
Backlund (3.575)

What are the comparables in terms of age and production?
I'm not attacking your assertion, I agree with you, I'm legitimately asking.
Because I look at the prospect of Hudler asking $7M long-term and think to myself a number of things:
- Spector is so full of crap that his eyes are brown (See Kyprios RE: Gio)
- Hudler is legitimately out of his mind or shooting for the moon.
- Negotiating tactic to try and get maybe $6M for a couple years and an NMC?

I don't like the trade talk, if anything, the start shows we are still in a rebuild and should continue trading older guys for assets, so Hudler, Wideman, Russell, is ok, Bennett is not. Stamkos is about two years from post apex.
I think last year was an aberration, and certainly a treat but the team should not begin dealing like the 2006-2009 Flames thinking we are a piece or two away from a Stanley Cup

Well I think it's similar to the 8x8 gio was supposedly asking for as well which he denied but which I think is also true.
Like with Giordano, I'm not sure it's worth it to give Hudler any contract that isn't for a short term, regardless of the money he is asking for.

Flames would need some idea if an extension was possible with him. If not then no way you make the deal. Makes zero sense.

Making a trade form a position of weakness? Not a good idea. They usually don't turn out well.
If the Flames stay in a position of weakness for most of the year, then I think we can all assume that Hudler (and others) will be dealt for picks/prospects.

Hudler RIGHT NOW is maybe a $5 to 6 million dollar man. Hudler next year will likely be a $4 million dollar man or less. If Hudler is willing to sign another contract basically identical to his current, I would keep him. Otherwise it's an overpayment. Johnny, Mony & Bennett are your core forwards as of right now with Gio, TJ & Hamilton being your core defenders. Everyone else should be getting paid less than those 6 players, Huds included although I love the guy.
Bennett for Stamkos is interesting is all I will say. And BTW Treliving wouldn't make the trade unless he already knew what type of contract Stamkos is wanting to sign. He's not going to give up Bennett only to have Stamkos walk 3 months later.

I'd be nervous about a Stamkos trade, he seems to be on the downturn in a big way. Injuries taking their toll.

I'd like to take a moment to ponder a world where Johnny feeds the puck to Stamkos all season long.

They would combine for 80+ goals and 180+ points pretty easily IMO
It would be utter insanity.
Could you imagine the PP?
