When I read that part of Thor's post, I kept thinking of the scene in Half-Baked where Dave Chappelle goes to the drug-support group and talks about how he was addicted to marijuana and gets summarily booed and thrown out.
Yeah, but not any of the parts of Torque's post like this...
Quote:
We shame smokers, being fat is no different. Both are (or require) direct, intentional actions that are often sustained through habit that lead to negative health and interpersonal outcomes.
Fat shame is necessary.Yes, you should be ashamed if you've treated the only body you get in this life like a dumpster. Fat shame is why I learned about proper diet and nutrition and lost weight properly. I'm fit as hell now, but it wasn't without realizing no one gets a second chance in this world and you have to just do it.
The trick is to hate your body enough to recognize you need to change, and love yourself enough to realize you're worth the effort. Self-actualization is key.
Odd that to you my comments "irked" you guys, yet not one word against the fking insulting stuff Torque said that you "liked" ... Sorry but when you "like" a comment, you like all of it, not parts....

There's almost always consequences. Weight is just one indicator of health. I learned that the hard way. I'm one of those guys who can eat and not gain a lot of weight. So even though I'm not overweight by BMI standards, last annual check up, I found out I'm high blood pressure.
Jeff? Is that you?

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
I actually think Torque has a point, if you've done it to yourself (as I have been lately- ) then you should be responsible for your actions and have to take your lumps.
If you havent and its a biological issue then the comment doesnt apply to you and no harm no foul.
Or am I totally off base with this?

Have you read nothing since his post? And concluded his points are the most valid?
I dont think the science is yet able to explain why many people dont lose weight longterm. Its an interesting theory that the body adjusts its set point for weight as you get heavier but its only a theory at this point.
I think one thing thats glossed over is that people are gaining weight back because they return back to the habits that caused them to gain weight in the first place. Stick to healthy eating, limiting your calories, and being active and youll keep the weight off. Go back to eating unhealthy foods, eating more calories than you need, and not being active then you will go back to gaining weight. Like I said, the science hasnt shown why the weight comes back. I also hasnt shown that people who stick to healthy living gain weight back.

Well, you don't "think" science is able to explain. The truth is not only is what myself and DA say based one evidence, but that you guys go out of your way to justify your "feelings" about obesity. For about the last 8yrs or so, the weight of evidence has been so much about contradicting the common idea of what obesity is, and what we should do to fix it.

Yeah! Lazy non committal losers who can't keep their focus to lose weight!

Actually the science HAS, and I have gone in to it in detail, and suggested you view the BBC doc, which you CLEARLY have not watched!

Thanks for your opinion and judgement though.
I haven't watched the documentary.
Provide me a link to peer reviewed research that explains why people put weight back on (and not just shows that they put weight back) and Ill read that.

Curious, Taco, have you ever been obese? Do you think global warming is a hoax, vaccines are bullsh%t, and GM is dangerous?

Obese no, but I did get fat at one point in life when I ate like crap, drank and partied, and got lazy. Bad lifestyle choices that I needed to change.
I have an open mind. I'll read research. Ive read Dr Arya Sharmas website and another posting. Much of his writings seem to based on his ideas and his view of his experience with his patients but not on proven science. Ive read many opposing views as well.

Well, myself and DA, we are part of many FB groups, podcasts, etc..
The overwhelming science is CLEAR. You can google it yourself, no problem.
Have an open mind? You seem to be starting with your preconceived notion and hope that I can provide you the evidence... While that is fine, I don't start a comment on this without evidence, you however seem fine to make statements without evidence, and then ask us to take care of that for you......

I know I have plenty of preconceived notions, mostly stemming from the fact that I consistently see heavy people filling their face at lunch, and skinny people running, biking or rollerblading at lunch. I'm sure there's no correlation, but the gym seems to be awfully short on heavy people outside of January.
Obesity is obviously something different, because no one would go through that if they had a choice, but I'm pretty sure that's not what posters like Tourque are writing about either.
I trained for 6 months got in amazing shape and took 2 weeks off. Ate some donuts and had a few too many calories and wow it made me out of shape, just 2 weeks. No wonder people have so much trouble, it requires near complete dedication.

Nope, not gonna happen. Nobody was upset at Tourqe's insulting comments. Why should I "step back."

Wow, simply wow. Did you read anything so far, did you watch the BBC series?

Oh no not at all, I mean what could he possibly mean by:
Quote:
We shame smokers, being fat is no different. Both are (or require) direct, intentional actions that are often sustained through habit that lead to negative health and interpersonal outcomes. Fat shame is necessary.
No Torque is not at all writing about that, that you should SHAME fat people, that is NOT what he said...
Quote:

Not only did Torque not say that, he totally did not suggest you should be ashamed at being overweight or obese. Also that anyone who is overweight or obese, does not care about life in this world, and wants to die. Because clearly if you do not lose weight, you hate life and want to die..

Hey Calgarypuck, likes for his post, this is the guy you "liked" a slightly over weight judgmental guy who has for the benefit of all of humankind decided that the obesity problem is simple, just work out, don't eat too much and shame yourself and realize you are fat, and need to become skinny..
What a hero!

Well, because you're coming off as a crazy person, and I'm pretty sure you're better than that. If you don't want to be, fine.

I watched some of it, and will probably finish it. Some of it is very interesting, but a lot of the blame deferral is not relevant to my experience. I'm overweight when I stop watching what I eat and stop working out. I'm not when I start watching what I eat, and start working out. I am aware that there are people that do not fall within that construct, but there are many, many people that do.

Angry, certainly. I am pretty upset at the ignorant and hateful comments and especially the beliefs by so many that are unrelated to reality or science...
I am better than what, not being polite while people belittle and insult obese and overweight people based on non scientific ideas? You have seen me be aggressive when it comes to denial of evolution, denial of climate change, etc.. ?
Maybe its the fact that I spend so much of my post Biggest loser time talking to people who have been treated like lazy, dumb, losers all their life much like the commentators here, based on again I say AGAINST THE SCIENCE, it does bug me.
But maybe its because I know what it feels like to be treated like that, and how much suffering so many have to deal with, thanks to the ignorance of so many CP commentators here in this discussion.

Wow, so you admit, you didnt watch the 3 hrs, you didn't clearly read this discussion where we made quite clear, a few pounds overweight has no comparison to obesity... Thanks for making my point.
If you want to be a ###### about it, go ahead, but I've been pretty clear throughout my posts that I'm not posting about obesity, which you'll remember not this entire thread is about, as much as you want it to be.
And I'm not just talking a few pounds. I picked up 40 lbs when I quit smoking. My weight will bounce 30 plus pounds between when I'm working out and when I'm not.

Recommended average daily calorie intake of 2,400 to 2,500 for an average male (lots of factors, but lets ballpark). You don't get obese on that. Show me some science that says otherwise or shows whatever its is you are claiming. Im actually not sure what you are claiming that science says. Peer reviewed research, please and I will read it with an open mind.

Enough with the "Wow" bull####. Holy.
Wait, you said earlier, and I quote:
Quote:
According to BMI I'm 10 lbs overweight, and I think that's pretty much bang on. I shoot for 200 lbs, and when I saw I hit 215 I started working out and eating better.
But lets say you picked up 40 lbs when you quit smoking, I have no doubt that is the case, I know many in your boat my friend.
I would put you in the other category, which has a reasonable chance at achieving a fit and healthy body, with sustained weight loss.
It is amazing how a few of you want to attack me, which is to attack myself and DA who are I think the only 2 100 pound plus weight loss members here.
Instead of respecting what we have to say about the general state of how nasty, mean, unscientific the discussion is about obesity, a good chunk of you guys want to attack me.
I don't honestly know how much more honesty I can share, how much science I can point or direct you towards, if you still choose to attack or belittle obese people for not "dealing" it.
Thankfully, this one CP thread, has on Facebook, brought a number of people together, whom privately will work towards creating a FAQ in response to threads like this, and bring more science and legitimacy to debating people.
CP gets top treatment, its not Fox news commentary, or anything similar, the only reason I try, is because I care about CP, there are so many smart, good people here of which I hope will see the light about their preconceived ideas on obesity.
