Sidney Crosby, the best player in the league at the moment and in the past decade in his prime at 27, and Malkin at 28 in his prime, arguably one of the strongest first line centers in the league at #2 could not get the Penguins to the playoffs this year.

McDavid will dazzle all of us with his play, but until Edmonton fixes their Defenceman woes, lack of experience and leadership, their goaltending (I think Talbot is suspect and recipient of a strong NYR defence first team, Scrivens 2.0), Oilers will be hard pressed to make the playoffs before they start getting cap issues with all their 1st overall picks.

Maybe Ron has reached the "I'm almost done with this, I'm going to say whatever I want" phase of his career? That comment is hysterical.

I agree with the posters here that he has a lot of knowledge of hockey history, but not great insight into running/building a team today. I always thought his real strength was being the smooth operating journalist to Don's meandering hockey rants. Taking the game into intermission, throwing it over to Don, to commercial, bring it back, and handing off to play-by-play guys before Don carries on over the entire third period.

Scrivens had a .931 save percentage with the Kings prior to being dealt to the Oilers.

Talbot to me still is just a more expensive Scrivens.

But this is the Oiler's after all, they'll find someway to mess this up.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but what does a new building have to do with the team achieving on ice success?

“And Connor McDavid and Darnell Nurse will fit in. Gimme a glass of wine or a beer, and I think in two years they win the Cup. That may be a little eager, but I don’t think more than four"

You guys up north must have better wine and beer than us poor Americans, if it can distort reality to such degrees, to get a career hockey guy to think that McDavid and Nurse can lift this pathetic group of underachievers, that have only learned LOSING to draft higher, would miraculously be made into champions by two unproven, at the NHL level, prospects.

In fairness, we do have better beer.

foss, I think you're just upset about the facts lol... Sure, the hawks just won another cup, sure they still have a great core of players in their primes, sure they've been considered a contender for a while and have people calling them a modern dynasty but they don't have McDavid!

I don't care how good people think the oilers are, if actual good teams (I'd say better teams but everyone is better) keep getting better then how are the oilers going to even catch up?

The "hype" has infected people and the infected are becoming no good. The only cure is cold weather. As soon as the oilers actually hit the ice, I'm sure the infected people will start to come to and realize the oilers are no good.

I think just think it has the potential to add to the general positive momentum of an organization. Gives everyone on/off ice an extra shot in the arm. That's not to say it guarantees anything, but it has the potential in my opinion.

@Poe...Even one of the greatest players of all time, in his sport, Michael Jordan, won NOTHING without a solid team around him...Even WITH McD and Nurse, the rest of the Oil have been no better than a low lottery team...I just don't think that adding single guy or two will be enough to make this squad as successful as MacLean is predicting...

I agree foss, I was just trying to sound as idiotic as the oilers. Sure, they're adding a potentially great player but if they go from horrible to slightly less horrible, that isn't enough to even matter. The hawks are a model franchise, I don't see how the oil are going to even come close to a team like them for....ever.

Oilers should at least make the playoffs in the next 3 years. The Cup is a longshot.

- Big, young power forward who saw limited action last year but will likely be a starter in the top 9 this year

A Stanley Cup in two years might seem a little premature, but four years sounds about right. You see, ol' Ronnie got the right province; he just picked the wrong city

Let's also not forget he's an Albertan and an Oilers fan (anyone remember that half Oilers/half Riders abortion of a jersey he wore on Coach's Corner a year or two ago. He's an old broadcaster who can't hide his bias anymore.

He sounds exactly like my buddies in Edmonton (one of whom texted me out of the blue right after the lottery win that they'd win a Cup before us...this is while we were still in the playoffs too, while they sat at home for the 9th year straight). Just chugging that Kool-Aid in the summer that Oiler fans excel at every year.
