No, I know that part. My comment was more to why they haven't banged out a deal already. My guess - $1.95M for 3 years right before the hearing.

I'm probably in a tiny minority, but I wouldn't mind if the Flames moved Bouma out this summer. His style of play isn't sustainable in my opinion, his body will breakdown sooner rather than later. His goal totals this year also seem higher than we can reasonable expect to see again. If another team out there wanted him at a slight overpayment I would definitely take it.
One big downside to that is he seems to be a popular team mate. He is in every photo out there of Flames players in public. Messing with the team chemistry too much can have big consequences, like the Ference and Kobasew trade.

I agree with most here. Split the difference and sign him to a 3 or 4 year deal for $2 million/yr.

I don't think Bouma will be productive into his late 30's or anything, but the guy is only 25. Lots left in the tank.

A healthy Bouma is exactly what the Flames needed in the playoffs last year.

Maybe... but he didn't even make it to the playoffs last year. I like him a lot as a player and he seems like a great guy... but if the Flames are moving up the ranks of contender, then we need guys who can elevate their game in the playoffs, not guys who limp in with broken hands/feet.
Shrug, I won't be sad if we keep him either, but we do have a glut at forward now, so hard decisions are coming.

Exactly my point. Can he play his style and be healthy at playoff time?

No idea, but Treliving has made some great trades the last six months or so, and I have confidence in his ability to maximize the return.

But it's not like we're paying to be a scorer. I, for one, won't be expecting a 16 goal/34 point season from him again even at 2 mill.
His play might not sustainable but at the same time this team is also improving, the possession numbers should improve, the PK should improve, other players should improve. So moving forward he might not have to sacrifice his body as much. Then again this is Booms we're talking about, we could be up 10-0 and he'd still throw his body in front a 100 MPH shot. You need guys like that to win.

Ummm...Yes? Bouma has played 78 games each of the last two years running.
Heart and soul/ go through a wall guys are just as important as your skill guys (especially heart and soul guys who can chip in 16 goals). I am FIRMLY in the don't trade him now camp.

I love Bouma and would want him to stay with the team.
Last year was his career goal scoring year though (even when considering his WHL and AHL numbers)
He has been injury prone right from the beginning due to his style of play. Those factors will definitely Impact an arbitration award

I think Bouma is a guy you can win with. Former WHL captain, heart and soul guy. It's not always about finding the cheapest contract to fill a role. $2M x 3 years sounds more than reasonable for what he brings and the potential to improve.

Stuck on nights for the most part these last few years and as a result listened to games more than I ever have.
Just based on the excitement of guys on air, callers, and the opinions of mostly every "hockey guy" I know personally, he has a bit of an "it" factor that helped form the identity we see today as well as raising the bar in terms of expectations.
I really have no clue what his value would be, and that's probably because he seems to be the poster boy for guys who's value to the team would never be properly represented by his return. Definitely part of a package for a player that's a visible upgrade in a similar role; now we're looking at how this player fits into our cap structure moving forward.
I think he's here until he decides he doesn't want to be

I would be saying to Bouma that 2.5M is what he is worth for a UFA year. Sign a short term deal and see if he can raise his value, or take a 3 year deal that starts around Calgary's figure and ends on Bouma's figure
1.6 + 2.0 + 2.5 = 2.03M per
If he does not want to give up any UFA years, a 2 year deal has to be more in Calgary's favour
1.6 + 2.0 = 1.8M per

How many playoff games did he play?
And the two years before that were completely injury plagued. It's impossible to play his style and not sustain injuries in my opinion.

Guys like Lance with an unselfish attitude and willingness to step in front of a Mack truck (or a 100mph slapshot) for their team, greatly contribute to the chemistry of the team. If all we had were a bunch of prima donna non-corner guys we would be the Oilers.

Agreed. But I also think they are replaceable to a large extent. Bouma can make way for Ferland, who will make way for Smith or another guy in a few years.
I like the Chicago model. Lock up the core and rotate the rest. Ladd was a huge heart and soul guy for them, and they moved him on and didn't miss a beat. They almost for sure should have let Bickell go, but they locked him up and it might have cost them Saad because of it.
Again, I like Bouma a lot, and I agree that you need players like him. I just don't think you have to have him exactly.
I won't be sad if we keep him for a few more years either. But he isn't a core piece that we should be afraid to move on from.

There simply aren't that many players like him. Guys who play his style, have his attitude, plus chip in offensively. You'll usually only get 2 out of 3 attributes there. I think if they get him for sub-$2 mil, that is a good deal.

Sorry what. Trade Bouma because he broke his hand on a blocked shot?
So you'd prefer we acquire the guy who blocks that shot and his hand is made of steel and thus it doesn't break, or would you prefer a player who simply wouldn't block that shot?
