Not sure if that had any connection to previous ones. My buddies thought it was something special but I'm pretty sure it is just chrome spray paint used as some sort of martyr ritual.

Pretty much.
They are "chroming" themselves, to become "shiny". In Valhalla, all things are clean (unlike the dirty dusty world they live in) and since the War Boys are obsessed with vehicles and the like, once would guess they like chrome as well.

Just spitballing here, but perhaps we're seeing massively increased solar radiation, thus creating huge-scale evaporation, and then what water does evaporate is whisked away by the solar winds (similar to what happened on Mars, but rather than being the result of a core cooling, instead simply being the result of increased solar activity). So you get oceans drying, you get no precipitation, and no clouds except for dust-storms, but despite an incredibly arid atmosphere there's still enough air and moisture to support life (at least for a while). You'd probably still get intense wind-storms, but rather than being driven by the oceans, they'd instead be driven by air moving between the equatorial and polar regions, which would have even greater extremes in temperature than they do now.
I dunno, maybe I've been watching too many TV shows about hypothetical exoplanets lately.

I hated the original and generally don't like post-apocalyptic movies. I saw the trailer and immediately was turned off. But I like action movies so I'm wondering if I'll actually like it judging by how everyone is rating it off the charts. (It wouldn't be the first time I didn't like a movie the masses love.)

'Mad Max' is in the title - so only reasonable for one to expect that character to be the protagonist. So yes - surprising, but great flick - as you said.
Cheers

Was going to wait on this one at first but all the great reviews and hype convinced me. Saw it yesterday, what an amazing ride. Drags you into its post apocalyptic world and just keeps on going. Chralize Theron was great, Tom Hardy and Nicolas Hoult were great too. Actually I cant think of any characters I didn't like. Hope they make another one!

I'm pretty sure they were spraying the Chrome spray paint into their mouths and inhaling so they could get H as F. And not some kind of chrome death ritual....

They only did it right before they went kamikaze. They were doing it so they could get H as F and not be too frightened to die gloriously.

So why the chrome spray paint?
We asked George Miller about that part of the film when we sat down with him earlier this month, and he had a very specific reason behind it.
"I saw a documentary where young [Cambodian] soldiers would go into war, they had little jaded deities -- and before they ran into battle, they put them in their mouths and just held them with little straps."
Miller went on to add that this film -- nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary -- was his inspiration behind why the War Boys were spraying their mouths with chrome paint. This was their ritual before battle -- that, like the Buddha, the chrome paint will help lift them to a higher place. It'll help bring them to Valhalla.

Colloidal silver to help fight infection just in case they get cut.
Saw the movie tonight. Man it was pretty. My friend picked the 3D version at I-MAX and it took me awhile to adjust to it but once I didn't notice the glasses and my eyes adjusted it was nice. The creativity that it took to build those cars is impressive! I think my favorite character was the guitar player. I laughed out loud when that character was introduced. I'm not sure if the writers are aware but the size of the boob doesn't matter when it comes to milk production. However, I don't think that really matters.
Even MacT liked it:
"Visually, to me, this is a better action movie. When I sit in the theater and watch the frames, visually it's a better action movie. And I think our most ardent detractor would have to admit that it is a better action movie visually."

Wow. Saw it tonight in 3D, and it was total sensory overload. I had to think about what I watched to really digest it and form an opinion. What I found really interesting, is George Millers brain, is pretty much a mirror of how my nightmares look which I thought was really cool. Chaotic, disturbing and difficult to make sense of at times.
As a pure action film, this movie is absolutely miles ahead of anything we have seen in years. The balance of CGI to practical effects was absolutely perfect. Not for one second did it feel like a video game cut scene. The simply enhanced the live action and did it brilliantly.
I have read a lot of criticism of the plot, but I is far deeper than it is given credit for. If you look beyond the basic convoy battle, there are a ton of layers to it, and I actually found Immortan Joe, to almost be a sympathetic villain like Khan in Star Trek II. He truly believed he was doing the right thing, and helping his followers. And it could be argued that in the wasteland, his tyranny was actually a better option than trying to survive on your own. He gave his followers a purpose. Either way though, what a great villain. Lord Humongous was always the face of Mad Max Villains in the past, I think the torch has been passed now. The acting done by the actor who played Joe, was phenomenal, considering he pretty much had to play the role with only his eyes. And the Doof Warrior has to be one of my favourite fringe characters of all time.
I want to see this again, but not in 3D though. The action is so intense at times, it became a distraction for me. The non 3D trailers look way cleaner.
Lastly, any of the mens right activists that see this film as some sort of agenda are complete idiots.

Saw this last night. I think all the glowing reviews sent me in with way too high of expectations, but I still enjoyed it. You definitely got your money's worth with the 3D effects, which isn't always the case.
One thing I'll say is I definitely felt confused at parts, especially the beginning. I don't know much about the Mad Max story (only previous one I had seen was Beyond Thunderdome as a kid many times - my dad had recorded it on VHS), but I figured that would be good enough background for this one. But the start felt like it was a sequel picking up directly where the last one finished off, to the point where afterwards I was asking people we saw it with if this was a sequel to one that came out a couple years ago or something.
Maybe that was the idea though; appealing to the longtime fans with lots of references to previous films, and enough action and pretty effects to bring in a new generation. Which it did. And it's not like that's a story driven, intricate plot or anything either. But I can't be the only one confused at the start, can I?
Maybe I need to go back to the Mel Gibson era ones and expand it past just Thunderdome before I see the inevitable sequel to this one.
