He is great at PBP. If he stopped using pronouns and replaced by using proper name of player or team, I think he would catch himself and balance it on his own. I notice the bias mostly when he says something like "they just need one goal and they are back in it".

He's a homer and was unbearable in game 2, but game 3 he seemed less biased. Talked a lot about ferland and bennett and less about lack's dad etc. Hopefully we'll see something more like game 3 and less like game 2 tonight.
It is what it is, were used to 75-80 games a year all pro calgary with the current Panel. Even Hextall's daughter seems obsessed with the flames.

Hughson is definitely a Canucks fan - but I don't think there is anything wrong with that. It's not an "embarrassment" and he's definitely not over the top. The reactions on this forum are rather childish.
I expect the broadcast on CBC to cater to the home town market. Games 1 and 2 were more Vancouver focused. Game 3 was definitely Calgary focused. In addition, Canucks were the better team in Games 1 and 2 for the most part, and more interesting to comment on then the Flames.
Everyone watching has their own internal bias filter reading into every statement said on air. I guarantee you are all misunderstanding or reading your own nuance into what is said and projecting your conclusions onto Hughson.
Stop yelling at Hughson for a perceived favoring. He's actually not that bad of a play by play caller outside of this supposed bias (comments about limping bambi aside...).
Would you rather Millions and Garret spending 20 minutes discussing their favorite brands of peanut butter mixed with some uncomfortable silences?

Yes. I actually muted my tv after "legend of lack" comment.

He is basically a Vancouver broadcaster. I would expect Vancouver fans would be pissed if they used Ball/Hrudey broadcasting team, and rightfully so. To suggest there might be a worse pairing is faint praise indeed. Hughson may not be the absolute worst, but it is a shame they couldn't have picked up a more neutral, third party guy.

Anyone that doesn't share my opinion is just being childish and feeding their own inner bias

I remember when he used to do Blue jays games.
I would definitely prefer a different guy but he isn't THAT bad.

I fully plan on watching the Punjabi feed tonight. I was at game 3 so didn't hear the PBP, but game 2 was just ludicrous. Accuse me of whining or whatever but it took away from my enjoyment of the game so.

If I had to guess I'd say it was brought up prior to game 3 after the ridiculous focus on Lack's father through the first two games.
The most telling moment thus far was the winning goal in game one.
"Russell scores!" followed by ten awkward seconds of stunned silence.
Jim Hughson is no good when doing a game where the Vancouver Canucks are involved, and flat out shouldn't be calling games when they play.
|
I think his silence after the goal is something he regularly does following goals regardless of what team scores. It is the one aspect of his commentary that I like. I'd rather listen to the reaction of the crowd to a goal and soak up the atmosphere rather than have someone talk over it.

I agree, hearing the crowd reaction after the goal is much better than listening to a commentator. Having said that, Hughson has had a prolonged pause after every goal by the home team this series. The only time there was a pause for a visiting team goal was during game one when David Jones and Kris Russell scored.
I'm hoping it is because he's adjusting cause when the visiting scores, there really isn't a need for a pause like that.

I've seen this posted a bunch of times since that goal. That had nothing to do with Hughson upset about the Flames scoring or anythign like that. That's his style. I have gone back and listened to every goal in the series. On every clean goal, he will say SCORES, then the goal scorer's name and let the crowd reaction, be it loud or quiet take over.
So when Russell scored, he let the stunned silence of the Vancouver crowd take over.
You can say that style sucks or you don't like it, but to say that was his bias showing thru is just false.
That Russell goal was just another case of people hearing what they want to hear. I think Hughson has been fine. He's been going along with the story of the series. Game 2 story was Canucks dominating and Vancouver's love for Eddie Lack. Game 3 was about Bennett and Ferland and he was giving much love there.

Actually I'm free to say anything I like as this is all opinion based. He might pause often after goals, but his heart sunk on that game winner and it was evident in his tone.
I've said before I like his style and think he's generally a very good announcer. But he's extremely biased when doing Vancouver games, and that is a widely held, accepted opinion.

You're right, that's totally your opinion. But you never mentioned his tone in that post. You were talking about the "awkward silence" and I'm saying that's just what he does. On any goal.

He sounded so disappointed on that Canucks goal that tied it 1-1 that I forgot he was a Canucks homer.

Is it? And by whom?
By people who don't like the Canucks?
Hardly an objective group.

Maybe you missed the first post in this thread:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...article624850/
And the 1001 times this subject has come up. I'm not saying it's an undisputed fact, but it's certainly a widely held opinion by many people all over the hockey world.

Similar to how Godwin's Law works, if you have a Jim Hughson thread, eventually VANFLAMESFAN will show up.
