Lives In Fear Of Labelling
|
My good stories are both with wrestlers...
I met Chris Jericho at the Silver Buckle in Red Deer on my 18th birthday. He was still in WCW at the time, it was a Sebastian Bach show. I remember seeing this shorter but built guy with long blonde hair and a Paul Stanley Solo album Tshirt on... saw his face and went "holy $***, you're Chris Jericho!!!" I asked him when he was jumping to WWF because is was being wasted in WCW (was kinda a big mark back then) he laughed and said you never know. (he ended up there within the year i think). He ended up on stage with Bach singing a few times to which Im not sure many other people knew who the hell he was at the time.
I also ended up drinking with Spike Dudley and Big Show in Kelowna when I lived there in 2003. WWF was in town for a house show and were staying across the street from the pub i frequented. Me and some friends where going to the show that day and having a drink on the patio of said pub, when we saw Bubba Ray Dudley walking down the side walk in front of us, one of us yelled out "bubba, who ya fighting tonight?" to which he replied " that fat f#^& Big Show" which made us all laugh at the table... we went to the show and then after went back to the pub.
I was up getting another round for our table when I saw lil' Spike dudley standing by the bar having a drink solo... so i invited him to our table, which he accepted. Over the next hour 4 or 5 other wrestlers wondered in and ended up at our table with us as the pub was packed. Spike and I talked for awhile, Chris Nowinski and I talked the most, he was a nice guy(felt bad when he had to retire so early).
The the Big Show walked in and sat with us, had the chance to talk with him for a bit, and me being a few drinks in relayed the story from earlier in the day when we asked Bubba who he was fighting... Show let out a huge laugh and yelled across the table to Bubba, who was sitting with us and said "Bubba what did you call me?" and long story short I had Bubba Ray in my face, yelling at me calling me a liar... to which I apologized and said I must have heard wrong, offered a hand shake which got slapped away and bubba then told me to f off. It kinda put a damper on the the fun for a few minutes. Shortly after Bubba left and Spike came over and told me not to worry about it that Bubba was an Ended up at the strippers with Spike and Show about an hour later too, the night was pretty epic ending with the Show asking the door man at the strippers where he could go for a rub and tug LOL. My friends always bug me that I should have tried to fight Bubba Ray... I wasn't nearly that drunk.

The Mediaeval Baebes dedicated a song to me at a concert the last time they were in Calgary then after the show invited me back to the green room to hang out.

My wife (girlfriend at the time) worked at a bar/restaurant/hotel in Edmonton that was a frequent stop for wrestlers that stayed in town. I've met a lot of the mid to late 90's WWF stars there on a few occasions. I was a huge Benoit fan (well before you know) and was thrilled to talk to him a few times, he actually remembered me the second time around as we had beers. Stone Cold, HHH, Hogan, McMahon they all stayed there. Thought it was the weirdest thing as it wasn't exactly fancy.
I meet lots of hockey players but they are mostly canucks so I don't think that qualifies as brush with fame. Only person I had to go out of my way to talk to was Sutter when he came to town with the Kings. I still love that man.

Met Mike Holmes and Damon Bennett at a golf tournament. Used the urinal beside Bennett. He didn't wash his hands. Then he shook hands with dozens of people and took pictures before tee off.

I had a pretty good chat with Russell Peters at the Las Vegas airport when he was travelling to Calgary to host the Junos.
I'm pretty sure I saw Leonardo DiCaprio in Cannes driving around on a Vespa back in 2002 during my European backpack trip.
I also had my name flashing up on TV when I won the $7,000 grand prize on YTV's TV call-in game show Destructo Brother's Loot. The answer was Beethoven's dog house.

I went to a Stamps game this year, the Brier champs, John Morris and Pat Simmons were sitting in front of us. We befriended them and ended up going to the hotel bar where Pat was staying, which was a lot of fun. Both of them were really nice guys.
I was at the old Cowboys when they had Bacardi Gras and a bunch of Flames were there. At one point Oliwa was behind the bar serving drinks and what not. I was standing there waiting to grab a drink and he grabbed one of the boxes full of beads and threw me a handful, and was like go see boobies in his think accent. I was was like.. uhhh thanks Oliwa. Hah.

An old one that a lot of people won't know but I took a shower next to Tom Towns at the U of A gym. He reminded me of a Clydesdale.
Took a piss next to Davey Boy Smith in the bathrooms at the old theatre in the Barron Building. He wore his cowboy boots outside his jeans.
Saw all the pre-dynasty Oilers when they use to having training camp at the U of A arena and always hung around the rink. The thing I remember about Gretzky was his bow-legged walk. I didn't know who Dave Semenko was at the time but I thought he was one of the better practice players.
Was in the line-up for the breakfast buffet with Jay Leno at Caesar's Palace (he was doing shows there). At the time I wondered why he would need to line up at the Buffet? My friend went up and said hello to him.
I got to make fun of Martin Gelinas when he came into the Tim Hortons in BV Square and didn't know the queuing procedure and cut in the line up. He was gracious and slightly embarrassed.
Not mine but I once new a guy who completely lacked shame. At some function he went up to Bobby Hull and addressed him as Mr. Howe saying he was a big fan and proceeded to talk to him and ask questions as if he was Gordie Howe. The guy would do things like that just for the reaction and the story he could tell later.

I took a piss beside Mario Lemieux in the bathroom and bought Paul Kariya a beer at Cowboys (the original location) back in the summer of 2001 when Calgary hosted a pre camp for the Salt Lake Olympic team....Lindros, Ryan Smyth, and others showed up later but we were gone by then.

Bertha Faye from the WWF was a family friend so we got to go backstage at one of the events here in Calgary. I remember meeting Chyna and being shocked that her voice was so dainty.
I had the two Hart brothers as Subs as well growing up and one of Brett Harts Nefews was on my hockey team when we were kids but unfortunatly he passed away from flesh eating virus which was so sad as he was such a good kid.
I unloaded Ed Whalens body from an aircraft when I was working on the ramp. Weighed about 500lbs and was eerie to do as it was my first live remains to unload off an aircraft.
Went to high school with Tiegan and Sarah. Wasn't really close friends or anything by my best friends sister was close with them. I was really shocked to hear their new material as they were very 'folkish' back in the day.

I met George St Pierre in Vegas. Super nice guy. Offered to be in a photo without even asking.
Met Brad McCrimmon during his Asst coaching days with the Flames. Was dating a girl who used to babysit his kids. He came home after the game, we had a few beers, took me on a tour of his trophy room and gave me an autographed stick and tickets for a game. He'll always be one of my favorite Flames.

How wouldn't you know if a relative was in Playboy? I'd imagine that news travels pretty fast.

I guess the thought of him casually coming across naked photos of his cousin was more entertaining than asking for her name...
