Doughty plays like 40 minutes a night. Getting an upgrade on the 2nd pairing so that he can play less will be huge for LA going forward.

That's a great return for the Kings. They can definitely use Sekera's service with the whole Voynov fiasco. Can't rely on Doughty to do all of the hefty work.

I was really hoping that the Flames would have drafted Mckeown last year with one of their 2nds. Great prospect and the fact that he's best buds with Bennett would've made it even better.

I don't think Voynov will be back this season. His trial on court will keep on going I am sure. LA knows that.
As far as the trade is concern, I think LA overpaid for this rental. Unless the old guys like Regehr and other leaves next season, Sekera will not be back unless Voynov gets traded or they found him guilty.

That is precisely what I think will happen. They'll sign Sekera to replace Reggie.

Um, what? 2 cups in 3 years including the single most dominant Cup Run of all time.
Everything else is gravy. I'd be thrilled as all hell to be a Kings fan right now. Its a goddamn shame they're sitting in our playoff spot and just got better.
If they make the playoffs that 1st is going to be practically worthless anyways and I cant speak for McKeown because I know literally nothing about him. Its a heavy price but hell, Sekera is going to re-sign. Because he's going to be on a powerhouse team that is looking to establish a dynasty and he'll get to do it in LA.
What they've done is sacrificed then for now but they're built for now. They're going for broke to win as much as they can right now.
It makes tons of sense.

Got traded for a round higher then Carolina acquired him for.
They picked up him from Buffalo for a 2nd rounder and Jaime McBain.

With the cap not going up they are going to be in tough to resign him.
Pearson, Toffoli, Jones, and Shore are all RFA who will get some sort of a raise.
McBain, Regehr, Williams, Stoll, and Sekera are now all UFAs.
Martinez and Muzzin both have about $3 million each in cap hit increase next year.
Clifford and Nolan have small raises that kick in.
Plus they have Kopitar and McNabb (who has been good for them) that they will have to worry about re-signing next season.
Unless they can move Richards (and maybe Brown) they won't have the cap space for all of those guys.

You didn't even know who Hunter Smith was. Come on, man.
|
TOI for his career? What Dman starts out his career averaging over 20 minutes a night as a rookie? Very very few. His last 3 seasons? 22:46, 23:40, and 21:12.
5 outta his 8 years in the league he's averaged at least 20 minutes per game, 2 seasons at 19 and a half.
Until he went to Carolina he never had a chance to put up offensive numbers, but even when he was still in Buffalo he was considered a top 4 dman with upside still, and once he went to Carolina he instantly became part of their top pairing.
Ask any Buffalo or Canes fan about him, they'll say the same. He probably won't be on the top pairing though. Simply because of Doughty and Muzzin's chemistry, similar to how Hjalmarsson is on the 2nd pairing because of Keith-Seabrook chemistry.
As for Hunter Smith, I don't care too much about prospects, until they get to the NHL or AHL level that is.

Yeesh, that seems like an overpayment. Does this mean the oilers might actually get something for Petry?

Trade deadline day is going to be pretty boring with most of the deals being done before Monday.

Oh, you're absolutely right, but I'd expect to see Regehr, Stoll and potentially even Williams being given their walking papers or signed to ridiculous discounts. Except for Williams, hes going to want a fortune and he may have to get it elsewhere.
I think they'll find a way to keep Sekera. If you're paying this much for a guy you're slotting him pretty high up in your future depth chart and you're not risking him walking over guys with much less left in the tank (Regehr).
But its certainly not an 'awful time to be a Kings fan.'

Defencemen are at such a premium this year, wish the flames had one to sell.

Just imagine what Brodie would get us in this market..
You would think Russell has some value like this if not more. NHL shot blocking leader, one of the better skating NHL dmen out there, good on the pp, solid in his own end...

Calling it right now!
Andrej Sekera will get injured on March 5th vs Montreal. Out for remainder of the season.
Doughty unable to suddenly transition back to 30+ minutes of ice time.
Collapse of LA.
No playoffs.

That's actually a pretty solid trade for both clubs when you consider that 1st round pick is contingent on LA making the playoffs.
According to reports, McKeown has at best stagnated and at worst taken a step back. Kid still has some intangibles and a high ceiling.

Admittedly, I haven't watched a lot of Canes games, but I did watch a lot of Sabres games when Sekera played for us. Flashes of offensive brilliance but was never really a game breaking player. Good for them to get a decent 1st rounder and a prospect out of it -- I think all we got was a 2nd rounder when we traded him to them (which I thought was a good return).

It's not rare for a dman to be Sekeras age before figuring things out.....great deal for the kings but unless they make major deals over the summer...He won't re-sign with them. ...He will be looking to get paid

As we always suspected, the Kings have turned around their regular season and should be favoured to win the Cup again.
