The crime index has them listed as safer than 3% of cities in the US. I know through my travels, a small population (300k) mixed with that high of a crime percentage translates to no nice areas.
http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ca/stockton/crime/
Somewhere like Chicago is a good example of what you are saying is Chicago. A ton of nice places but a good chunk of the city that you do not want to wander in. I was told I wouldnt last 5 minutes without being beat up and robbed if we strolled past the United Center for a few minutes (opposite direction from the billy goat tavern)
|
The crime map you link to proves my point--high crime rates are heavily concentrated in a relatively small area of the city (central and south). Those would be the high poverty areas as well. I am not saying Stockton is a place I would like to live and having never been there, I have no interest in defending it. Only commenting on the idea conveyed here that Stockton, on the whole, must be an unlivable place because of its high crime rate. Gaza City is an unlivable hell hole. Stockton CA much less so. The boys will be fine.

How many Stockton Thunder players have been murdered in recent years?
If you look at a list of the most dangerous cities in the US, not only are NHL cities Detroit and St Louis (and former NHL city, Atlanta) on the list, but so are other AHL cities like Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Rockford.
Rockford seems like a city that's not quite as nice as Stockton. Similar crime rates but nearly half the population. The Blackhawks have won two Stanley Cups since moving their AHL team to Rockford. Maybe the Flames are hoping to duplicate that success.

I think people forget that much of the crime levels in any city are in poverty stricken areas, our prospects aren't going to be living in the low income areas of the city. They might not be in the rich areas, but they will be in middle class to upper middle class areas and likely have little to actually worry about.

Flames buying ECHL Stockton Thunder to move AHL affiliate
Lease transfer unanimously approved by Council.

The City Council on Tuesday night unanimously approved the transfer of the Thunder’s lease at Stockton Arena to the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League. The transfer of the lease could be a step toward finalization of the sale of the team by owner Brad Rowbotham to the Flames.

Burke was at the meeting.
Now goes to ECHL officials for approval. Will be decided next Wednesday. If approved, Flames can officially purchase next Thursday.

Based on this thread I'm surprised Burke wasn't shot walking to the meeting.

He probably was. Since it was in Stockton, and it happens so often, they just didn't bother to mention it.

They probably took a shot at him and he just undid his tie, rolled up his sleeves and beat the crap out of them in the nearest barn, wood-shed or crack den.

I don't live in Stockton, but I am a season ticket holder for the Stockton Thunder. The arena is located in a nice waterfront location near downtown Stockton, and I look forward to going to each game. A few of our fan favorite players have purchased homes in the area, and I don't think any of them have been shot at. The Thunder have a nice fan base of devoted loud fans, and they always take care of the players. There are many friendly fans that go out of their way to help setup families of the players that make the journey down to see their son play.
I am positive that Stockton will make the Flame's fans proud!

The Thunder gives premium housing accommodations to players. The picture looks like a resort. I think players would be quite happy there.

Why's that? Isn't this what fans want us to do in Calgary?

Fans with absolutely no understanding of the financial implications of oversaturation, yes.

Or ones that would prefer to watch the AHL over the CHL. Just because someone wants something does not mean they do not understand the implications of what they want.
