Leddy has been really poor when pressured in his own zone, and often coughs up the puck when ducking checks...and while he got PP time, Q kept him FAR away from PK and unfavorable matchups when he could...moreover, he HAS to be matched with a solid "stay at home" partner...Leddy's main asset is speed in the open ice, but still is nowhere near being a top pair guy, defensively, at least....very much an Offensive D-Man. Never faulted his effort, which made him MUCH better than Cam Barker, but, he is still a work in progress.

As said many times, the Islanders are a much better team on paper today then yesterday. Both players are pending UFA's so I agree that Boychuk may have been an overpayment. The thing is that if they can't agree on extensions for either of these two, or the Islanders are out of it come March, both can be flipped again for picks.

The Islanders have some legit prospects, and still have a young core so even though they have no high end picks (as of today) in the next draft, they are still in pretty decent shape going forward. Another thing they have going for them is some continuity as all of their forwards are signed till the end of next season. I don't want to say that Snow has things figured out but he has shown that he isn't affraid to try and improve his team. The Vanek deal was a huge disappointment but it was an attempt to bring in a first line player and to send a message to his captain, his team and the fans that he is trying. Bringing two key players from championship teams has to be looked at as a positive all around. Giving up Pokka when you have Reinhart and Pulock is dealing from a strength. No NHL roster can carry 3 young d men, be it this year or next, or the one after. Not only that but the two they kept can now have a chance to develop properly without being rushed due to the lack of capable bodies.

So to wrap, a bit of an overpayment to Boston but I think Snow wins both these deals, provided the Islanders a) make the playoffs or b)re sign theses guys or c) flip one or both if they are out of it. For their sake I hope it is a and b, as they turn this franchise around prior to moving into the new building starting next year.

Well even better for the Ilse's then. I forget how young he still is.

Moving Leddy's $2.7 million and adding Carbomb's $550k puts the 'Hawks $718k under the cap before the deadline...this move was a pure salary dump...I expect the plan will be letting Oduya walk as a UFA next year, letting Rozival retire as a UFA, after the season, and seeing what we have with Dahlbeck, Johns, Clendening, and Pokka...there will be no rush to get Nilsson to the US, and nothing lost if Brennan gets claimed

also don't forget Calvin de Haan. Still only 23 ... it has been a very slow development curve for him because of injuries, but he's getting there. He looked quite good for them last season

Might be an opportunity for Treliving.
Baertschi for Reinhart straight up?

One ripple effect of moving Leddy...the 'Hawks will PILE the minutes on the top pairs, as, with Dahlbeck getting returned to the Rock, the 3rd pair, as of today, is Rundblad and Rozival, both of whom have been AWFUL since last season (or a Q pet, Cumiskey, who many 'Hawk fans view as worse than worthless!).

Nice trades for the Isles. They land two good dmen that should definitely help improve their team. Might even be able to battle for a playoff spot. On an even more positive note it appears Treliving wasn't willing to give up more than this for either which I am glad to see.

I don't know how anyone can say this isn't a huge win for the Islanders? Two proven NHL defensemen for not a heckuva lot. Good moves by Snow. Grabbed the two best defensemen available on the same day.

It is more than I would want to pay.. but that is a big boost to an otherwise shabby defense.

Takes a lot of pressure off of some of their young guys bringing in a great vet like Boychuk. Leddy has benefited from sheltered minutes in Chicago, so we will have to see what happens when he is thrust into a bigger role.. but you can't argue with his resume, the guy brings great experience.

I can't see this team missing the playoffs as long as Tavares stays healthy.

Exactly. Two NHL defensemen added and no one off their roster in return.

And the Islanders have a ton of prospects, including:

Reinhart, Pulock, Dal Colle, Ho Sang, Strome, de Haan, Collberg and Lee

They will not miss the picks, and probably wont miss Pokka

would you trade the Islander's roster for the Leaf's roster right now?

I think I would.

Because of Snow's risk taking, and how it will show up Edmonton's refusual to pull the trigger, I am going to be really cheering for the Islanders to make a run this year.

The Oilers should have been all over both of these trades.

Good day for the Islanders, I hope they do well this year.

The Oilers should have been in on deals like this. But Boychuck probably would have blocked the trade, and they probably didn't have any quality prospects to trade for Leddy, what would they have given up to match that, Marincin & Brossoit? I don't they they could afford that with there organizational depth.
