After the Friars make it 10-1, Gillies gets pulled so they can give Brendan Leahy his first NCAA appearance.

No, its just they are getting secondary scoring right now. In fact, almost all their forwards have or are projected to have career years in offensive production.
Sarracino and Mingoia have in particular improved from last year. They are averaging near a point a game.
The conception that Providence doesn't have good offensive players outside of Mauerman and Jankowski is a little overblown.
The biggest surprise of the season so far is Mauerman's slow start, but he seems to be picking it up lately too.

Providence doesn't have any big name offence guys, that's all. No high draft picks, stuff like that.

Sorry if this a fata.
Here's some interesting stuff from Ryan Lambert (a regular observer of Hockey East) on Brandon Hickey:
Quote:
I asked Hickey's coach, David Quinn, about his development on Friday night, which turned out to be a 9-5 win. In it, Hickey was on the ice for two power play goals for, and one for at ES; as well as two against at evens and one against on the PK. It was a wacky game that featured 16 power plays, including a five-minute major and multiple 5-on-3s.
Said Quinn: "He can really shoot the puck. I don't know if there's a guy in the league who gets more pucks through than him. He keeps it low, and he can shoot any type of puck. You don't have to have to put it on a platter for him.
We were actually talking about this during the week. We had some guys working on their one-timers, and I asked them who had the best one-timer on the team. They both said — actually it was Jack [Eichel] and [draft eligible defenseman and occasional Hickey collaborator Brandon] Fortunato — but they both said Hickey. The thing about Hickey is he can hit a one-timer no matter where the puck is put towards him.
So, he's done a great job getting pucks to the net, and he's dangerous on the power play."

So excited to see how Hickey progresses. All the reports at the draft said that he is a tremendous skater already and now he has that laser from the point.

A rookie defenseman to be given the role he has is pretty great. I sometimes feel that because we were so spoiled to have a Brodie develop like he did I see that progression happening to every good skating dman prospect. The realist in me knows it's quite unlikely that Hickey makes the show, but because of the "Brodie effect" I keep seeing a future top pairing D in him

Boston University's game tonight against New Hampshire is airing on TSN2 right now. BU is up 2-1 after 1. Hickey had an assist on BU's second goal with a nice shot from the point that led to a rebound goal in front.
Providence is also playing Notre Dame tonight and it is airing on NBC Sports Network in the US. It's still scoreless about halfway through the first. Providence leads the shots 10-0.

I saw Hickey play at the prospects camp last year, and i thought he was the biggest surprise there. I wasn't anticipating anything special, and i thought there was better D-men still available when he was taken at the draft- I figured he was a mediocre AJHL player. I was very wrong (not that i'm a pro scout or anything).
He was excellent defensively, had a great shot, and was one of the best skaters out there (It was just prospects camp, but still...). He also looked alot bigger than 6'2' IMO. His numbers for a first year college defenceman are great, especially considering it doesn't look like he is on the first PP unit.
It's just my humble opinion, but I think they hit a home run drafting this guy.
EDIT: He just scored.

All the non-Providence picks are scoring tonight...
- Harrison has Colgate's only goal as they trail Harvard 4-1 late in the third.
- DeBlouw has MSU's third goal, and they lead Penn State 3-0 halfway through the third. DeBlouw is now on a three game goal-scoring streak.
- Hickey just scored early in the third to put BU up 5-3 over UNH.
Meanwhile, Providence is destroying Notre Dame on the shot clock, but are trailing 1-0 late in the second.

Providence can't buy a goal despite getting twice as many shots as Notre Dame (38-19) and fall 2-0. The same teams meet tomorrow night, also airing on NBC-SN in the States.
Colgate lost 4-1; MSU won 3-0; and BU won 6-3. There was no additional scoring from any of the Flames prospects.
