I remember during Sven's draft year he was praised for his willingness to play in high-traffic areas - I don't know if injuries have played a role or not, but he probably should start the season in the AHL to work at that part of his game.
Honest question: If Poirier had a great season and is near NHL ready and in some folk's opinion the Flames #3 prospect... why was he left off of Team Canada WJC?
He and Domi are the highest picks not on the team.
Was he hurt? Was he invited to the camp and last cut?
Sounds like with size and speed he could have fit in as a PK / 4th line guy

I wouldn't look at WJC roster as any kind of real metric. You're trying to build a team with certain objectives, that might have Poirier thought of in a certain role that was already filled by another player according to Hockey Canada.

He wasn't given much ice time and didn't impress in the Russia - Quebec series, so wasn't invited to the final camp. At least that's my take.
Anyways, I don't mean to jump on anyone about their opinion. I'm just a fan of Granlund and would like to encourage a little more excitement about a really good player in the system.
I think different opinions are one of the fun things here so if you like Granlund then go ahead and promote him.
Looking at the numbers (and names) you posted I don't find them that impressive for a guy looking to be a top 6 NHLer, especially after seeing him and the way he played when up in the NHL.
He certainly isn't crap I just think he will struggle to produce in the NHL and if he can't even crack over a PPG it will be even tougher since he doesn't bring much outside of offense.

My guess is you will get the usual "politics" BS that people trot out when their guy doesn't make Team Canada.
I don't think it means Poirier is crap, as Team Canada is an insanely tough team to make.

From what I recall they said they were worried about his PIMs and thought his potential lack of discipline could have been an issue with international reffing.

Granlund got my vote. Has one of the best releases I've seen since Mike Bossy. Criminally underrated especially compared to his brother. Could see him scoring 30 goals or more consistently in the NHL especially on a line with Gaudreau and Ferland.
Looking at Bingo's old lists, it got me thinking, which prospects are we severely underrating right now?
I think, had Ferland not got injured, he would be in the conversation with Granlund/Reinhart. He had 18 points in 25 games for a marginally higher PPG than Sven Baertschi. What's really impressive though is that he went like 10 games without scoring much at all, only to explode at over a ppg pace until his injury. For a brief window last year Ferland played some fantastic hockey.
We also might be underrating Kulak/Culkin in the same way we underrated Brodie.
Amazing that our top four is likely going to be all forwards and highly skilled ones at that. I picked Poirier over Baertschi, although I do hope that Baertschi comes to camp and blows us all away. Poirier just has too many weapons, he may not be as skilled as Baertschi, but there's so much more to Poirier's game that you simply can't ignore. Hoping that both of them are solidly in our top six in the next couple years.
The one thing about Baertschi is the soft plays he makes on the puck (like PPM mentioned). I know the management staff have been hard on him because of his play away from the puck. He needs to realize the effort needs to be there and pulling the chute is only going to drive the coaches nuts. He gets that sorted then he will become a heck of a player. If he takes the easy way out then he might as well play for the Oilers because the coach here will hold the player accountable.
This was really tough for me to decide. There were 4 players I thought were neck-in-neck. Voted Baertschi (and surprised myself in doing so).
Ward has said Granlund and a few others have passed Baertschi, but I am not sure that is the way the organization views it. However, I can't for a minute argue that he is indeed the 3rd best rated prospect. You can make very good cases for a handful of other players. He had a disappointing season from a few different angles. Hopefully he can rebound.
Apropos of nothing, when looking at Shae Weber's stats I noticed he had quite a poor offensive showing on his draft year. Just 18pts in 70 games. Just shows you what exciting things can happen as players progress. Not everything goes as it should
Poirier, Reinhart, Grandlund, Wotherspoon....
I am going to start having to roll dice to help decide pretty soon. So impressed with our prospect stock of late.
Then there are the ones I don't even know how to rate
Seilof, Wolf, Jankowski.........

Reason: Changed word rookie to prospect.
Has only progressed since being drafted. Great all around playmaker with a heck of a shot. Sure he doesn't have the speed of a roadrunner or the size of a redwood. Doesn't need it. Hockey sense is amazing, has a Cammy like knack for finding open ice. He's going to be good. Better than a few highly touted prospects I surmise.
But at least he should get a fair shake at top five love this year. I think last year he finished 11th or 12th in voting and I thought that was egregious then.
Sven has #3 locked up. But I sincerely hope Markus can win more than enough votes form the Sven guys to secure #4. He's earned it at the very least with his progression and play from last season.
