In 2012, more than 82,000 horses were slaughtered in Canada—that’s nearly 1,600 horses killed each week.
Many were young healthy horses that were sold at auction to the highest bidder - a “killer buyer” working for a slaughterhouse. In fact, over 50% of horses sold at rural auctions go to slaughter.
source: Humane Society International

I had no idea they slaughtered so many horses, and for human consumption... It looks like they recently opened up a new horse only slaughterhouse in Westwold bc.

It's apparently big business...

Horse meat is big business in Alberta

Canadians consume about 650,000 pounds of horse meat and export about 30 million pounds of it each year, with most coming from the province best known for its cattle.

“Probably two-thirds of the Canadian processing is done in Alberta,” said Bill desBarres of the Horse Welfare Alliance of Canada, an advocacy group for the horse-meat industry.

Yeah, we could also divert the Bow River California on a mega pipeline, and that would be awesome for the economy too! Doesn't make it right.

Calgary Stampede is what made Calgary a world class city to begin with, also pretty much anyone living/working in Calgary is directly or indirectly related to Oil and gas and Agriculture.

I may not be the biggest rodeo fan but when I go to the rodeo it's the Calgary Stampede, it's a real life experience event you can't get anywhere else.

Just because it once defined Calgary doesn't mean it has to forever. I enjoy the Stampede, it's silly, fun, I'm missing it all this year unfortunately. The Rodeo and Rodeo's in general are a little silly. I certainly don't define Calgary by the Stampede anymore.

Banff isn't Calgary. Take away the Stampede Rodeo and what do people come here for?

Flames, Stampeders, Oil & Gas. Everything else follows that.

Just the Stampede, not the rodeo part? Plenty of people come here for the carnival and fake fun cowboy atmosphere.

Why are you allowed to eliminate four things?

It's hard to pick what defines a city though, I wouldn't even say the Stampede defined the city entire.

The entire Stampede STARTED as just the rodeo...why on eath would we ever disassociate from that? Take it away and you have K days or whatever its called now...or any other geneic carnival in every other city in the world.

As for the bolded...there is a petty good reason Calgary is known as the "Stampede city".

Because it's stupid, cruel and barely above dog fights?

Roping up a cattle, how joyous.

Cattle is plural.

Steer, bull, cow, heifer, etc is singular.

Comparing the rodeo to dog fights is a bit of a stretch

well

"treat (a person or an animal) with cruelty or violence, especially regularly or repeatedly."

don't know how calf roping isn't violent, also, nice false equivalence. We aren't going to change each others minds so just agree to disagree?

Now I know wiki is far from accurate but:

Quote:

There are concerns over the welfare of the calves used in professional rodeo, and the industry itself polices events closely, penalizing competitors who "jerk down" a calf with the rope or flip it over backwards.[2] Dr. Eddie Taylor stated that in 16 years as an attending veterinarian at PRCA rodeos in Arizona, "I personally have not seen a serious neck injury to a tie-down roping calf." [3] Statistically, the rate of injury to the animals is relatively low. In 1994, a survey of 28 sanctioned rodeos was conducted by on-site independent veterinarians. Reviewing 33,991 animal runs, the injury rate was documented at .047%, or less than five-hundredths of one percent.[4]

Your opinion...not shared by millions of others.

Im quite proud to have it identify the city i grew up in and have lived in most of my life. Others don't and that's fine, but the Stampede and all its components are here to stay.

I guess we could be known as the city with the pretty red bridge, but somehow that just doesnt have the same allure.

A heifer is a cow who hasn't yet calved, so no one's mom can be compared to a heifer.

Well for one thing, we were talking about horses/chucks since that was what the protesters wee there about.....nothing to do with the rodeo but since you moved the goalposts...

From one of the protesters mouths..

Quote:
Well, I think the point is pretty clear. Enough is enough. No more dead horses. For the last nine years in a row horses have died during these races and for the last 28 years in a row more than 60 horses have died during these races,” said Daviduk, adding it was surprisingly easy for the two to execute their plan.

“So at what point do we say the risk of injury and death is too high, we need to retire these. How many horses have to die?”

Sounds like a lot for sure...until you add this fact to it

Quote:
In 28 years, there have been more than 78,000 horse starts at the Stampede.
I just dont see how that can be construed as "abusive" or "excessive" or the risk far to high.

Again, these animals are racing and alive for one reason...its what they do. If they dont do that...well there is a reason the horse meat industry has little problem finding product.
