I thought the ref did a good job not falling for the other flops he had all game. That last one was iffy, but at least it was borderline. The other ones were just terrible. I hate seeing him on the ground for half the game, it's a shame seeing him flop so much.

I'm stunned they won that game. Mexico clearly the better side until they went bus parking.

I think its the result of some poor coaching on Mexico's part. They came out of the gates for the second half really well but they let off the gas in the midfield.
In the first half they owned the midfield and Robben and RvP had nothing to work with other than carrying the ball in themselves which is exhausting, but in the second half the Mexicans lost the midfield.
I think taking Dos Santos off was a mistake. He was really making things click for the Mexicans.
I was looking forward to extra time actually, Robben wins a greasy one, but Marquez didnt need to make that tackle, there was nowhere for Robben to go.

Van Gaal looks like a genius for subbing Van Persie for Huntelaar. And Huntelaar looks awesome karate kicking the corner flag

For the record:
Yes, the Netherlands started playing an entertaining brand of football once they were down.
That's really why them sitting back the way they did to start the game and the way they did against Chile is so annoying. I don't think something the Mexicans did to them, it's just the way they want to play.
Effective, but annoying.
And you have to hate Robben, no matter how good he is

Remember Marquez had earlier stuck out a leg a Robben jumped over it.
Marquez is crazy. He always does stupid things.

Nothing iffy about that penalty. Robben had nowhere to go. That should be called every time.

Robben, Suarez, Ronaldo, all such great talents, all act like total assclowns. Suarez is obviously in a different, more sociopathic league.

Yes, technically the Mexican had the foot in front of him, but to me it looked he would not have fallen down or even lost the ball had he not decided to do the swan lake.
Which is to say that I'm not really against the decision, but I still hate Robben and want to see the Dutch lose
Unfortunately it wouldn't be the first time I've been rooting against a team with Robben only to have him ruin the day. Last time was the Championsleague final 2013.
(Well actually I was more just rooting for Dortmund, but still )

The pen. Stands on his right toes causing him to be thrust into the air.
Legit but embellished.

Ya it's easy to hate on Robben but Marquez was totally exposed as lacking a few times in that game, he is a long ways from his Barca days and as somebody said earlier, going to ground there was monumentally stupid.
Still feel bad for Mexico and Concacaf, was hoping the dutch and argentina would get upset and that bottom bracket would produce some new blood in the world cup final.
Always amazes me at the world cup how the big teams with the star players always end up in the finals. In my lifetime there has never been a legitimate Cinderella story make the finals.

Contact or no, you're not allowed to stick your leg in the path of the attacker. Sure it was embellished, but that doesn't take away from the fact it's a penalty.

Marquez slid in, he's committed first. It's not Robben responsibility to avoid him.

Well, it's somewhere between a dive and embellishing.
I'd call it a dive, because I don't think Marquez did anything that would have actually mattered to Robben at all.
Still, it was a stupid play by Marquez, and I think Netherlands would have scored anyway somehow.

I guess maybe I don't know the FIFA rules inside out but it seems to me that Robben easily could have continued running and continued that play.
Marquez going to ground should not have impacted the continuation of the play and only did because Robben chose to go down.

for a sport that has little scoring, it's very hard to defend.
These defenders are world class in their positioning and timing.
Cannot raise hands, cannot lunge for the ball without getting it. Must always hold proper position.

I'll concentrate on the red part. Marquez going to ground AND missing the ball. That in itself is a foul. At this point the attacker can do whatever he wants, he can choose to not take the foul and continue on. Or initiate contact, fall over, cry whatever and it's a foul for the defender.
Defenders need to stay on their feet.

It's somewhat problematic. Personally I don't like the call that the ref made, and I think many refs just would not have cared if Robben does the swan lake again, and it clearly wasn't a deliberate foul.
But technically that doesn't matter.
Really the biggest reason I hate the way Robben played (and really the way he plays all the time) is that since it wasn't an attempt to trip by Marquez, just an accident, all this does is encourage more dives. Nothing defensemen can do to respond to this, except not make mistakes, which is what they're trying to do anyway.
This is in contrast to PK's called for minor but deliberate fouls such as the first PK of the tournament, where Fred clearly fell down without needing to. But that does discourage minor deliberate fouls.
