Yeah, but the player has input. A lot of guys take less money to stay somewhere to keep the team together and so far it hasn't resulted in them winning anything. Richards hasn't won anything since 2004, but he's got as many Stanley Cup finals appearances with non entry level contract salary as Sidney Crosby does, and one more than Malkin.

Jagr is ahead in "career earnings" because it doesn't appear the signing bonuses are calculated in there, but Jagr never really cashed in on signing bonuses in his time. He has a total of $700k on the books from them. His contract for next year is 3.5
So a total of 125.5 million total earnings so far for Jagr, and his last year for sure is coming up, so that's likely the final tally. Richards has an entire new contract to close a 4 million dollar gap. Someone will sign him to a deal that lets him break it in one year. For another reference, Ovechkin's comedic deal will put him at $136.9 million when he hits 35, assuming he plays the entire thing (and why wouldn't he, he's getting 10 mil a year for the next seven years)
Ladies and gentlemen, the highest paid player in NHL history. Brad Richards.

Not sure those numbers are correct.
He has had 4 contracts in his NHL career:
2000-2003: $2.9M
2003-2006: $5.8M
2006-2011: $39M
2011-2014: $53M after buyout
So that's just over $100M before his next contract. He'd need another $25M or so to catch Jagr.

If you are using historical salaries like Jagr, you need to factor in inflation as well.

Yep. Nick Lidstrom was closer to Jagr than Richards, but since he still has time to sign lucrative contracts, probably will pass Lidstrom.

Only hypocritical if Burke was willing to back up the same dumpster full of cash that feasted and king did.
I seem to remember Burke mentioning they were out of it because they wouldn't g mpete with the term.

IIRC Burke said major reason was because he wouldn't front load the contract like other teams and tack on those "cheater years" to lower the AAV.

"We lost out on the Brad Richards sweepstakes for two reasons," said Burke, who is believed to have offered the player a six-year, $42-million deal. "One, we didn't offer as much money as other teams and more importantly we didn't structure the contract like other teams did.
"These deals that are front-loaded and have small amounts at the back end, in my opinion, are designed to circumvent the salary cap."

I just took the total value of all of his contracts, which obviously include the signing bonuses.
He earned about $47.5M on his 3 contracts prior to the NYR one. To get to your $121.5M figure he'd have to have earned $74M from his last contract, which is impossible given that it was a $60M contract that has been bought out. The actual amount he'll get out of the deal is about $54M. Given that your figure is about $20M too high, I assume you're counting the $20M he got in signing bonuses in the first 3 years of his contract twice.

ahhh, I didn't see that they included the signing bonus in the salary column. What a stupid way to display those numbers
So yeah, that number is way off.

Not really. If the goal is to see how who's earned the most money over their career, you'd want to just use actual money earned.

What a joke the Rangers organization is when it comes to signing UFA contracts. Just when you think they've learnt from their stupid mistakes, they sign another over-the-hill UFA to a massive contract. Watch them offer Stastny 8M x 7 years.

Not too be one of those hockey fans, but it's ultimately the fans that are going to foot the bill of this mistake. NYR's ability to find fans to bear the cost of these mistakes is probably one of the best in the leagues. B. Richards wasn't trolling, but did wind up taking the maximum amount possible to play for a good hockey team and didn't fully live up to the expectations. Not a bad player, badly overpaid, rightfully accepting the cash truck as most of us would.
Also, there are a lot of other factors. Sometimes a player doesn't mesh with an environment, a coach, a trainer, the culture of a team. They get demoted, minutes pulled and the psyche goes offline where it needs to remain competitive. I think there's many organizational barriers than can take a good move on paper and over time to make the reality of the choice no longer acceptable to both parties.
For NYR club to be able to move on as well as B. Richards presents the best possible outcome for the demoted player and the NYR to move forward.

It makes you wonder if Kovalchuk regrets not playing like garbage for a year or two and getting bought out by the Devils. Imagine the massive payday he would have received in getting paid top dollar in both leagues at the same time.
