Well Mcdavid and Eichel are definitely projected to be. And were not arguing who's gonna be better than Mackinnon it's who will be better than O'Reilly and the top 5-6 next year definitely have the potential to be.

Sure but Nylander but was looked at as number 1 in a weak draft class with no clear number 1 which isn't the case with the 2015 guys. There were as many if not more that had Ekblad as number 1. Nylander falling back isn't surprising because he wasn't ever regarded as being a elite level prospect like the 3 guys in the 2015 draft.
McDavid, Eichel and Hanafin have been projected elite guys for a couple of years now and haven't done anything to change that.
I guess they could all fall off but that seems unlikely.

There were no clear stand outs this year. In years with Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, Stamkos, Tavares, Etc you knew ahead of time and it's pretty safe to assume next year will be the same with Mcdavid and Eichel.

Sakic: "His agent, Pat, seems to think he signed a one-year, $6.5 million deal and forgot about the $3.5 million first year" - boom

Sounds like O'Reilly is asking for more than 6.5 per.

Funny how retired players in management see things differently now. Sakic seems like he's picking it up quick.

Well it's his job. The team and his bosses come first and overpaying for a player only benefits the player.

IIRC Sakic was pretty reasonable in only going for one year contracts near the end of his career. Most want a multiyear contract.

He was 32 when he signed a 5 year deal worth 36+ million. At 37 he signed a one year deal worth 5.75m which turned into a bargain when he scored 100 pts. But he stuck them with 6.75m and 6.0m demands the next 2 years because of it.
Joe Sakic was never reasonable when it came to money, remember he also signed one of the most significant offer sheets in history as well.

I would love it if the Flames were paying 6 mil to a 100 point scorer.
Cammy earned 6 mil + and he was never anywhere near 100 points.

I don't understand what Colorado is doing. They nickle and dime the guy two seasons ago opening things up for an offer sheet. They pay Varlamov close to 6 million. Now they refuse to qualify O'Reilly and instead go to team elected arbitration and start trash talking in the media.
I get they want their core under 6 million. But they screwed that up when they left him open to an offer sheet. Maybe if they weren't paying Berra 1.5 million a season...

McDavid is a different beast - he's been projected number 1 in his draft year for the last 3 years.

Scoring league wide has fallen off dramatically since then. In 06-07, 28 guys scored 80+ points, last year 7 did.

Well during that time Colorado did become under "new management" with Sakic and Roy having entering the picture.
Regardless, do you think O'Reilly is worth $6.5M? This is absolutely the right move for Colorado as they either negotiate a new deal with O'Reilly or they have a chance to keep him for less than what they paid for him last season.
And it's also a different situation with Varlamov. Colorado is buying UFA years with Varlamov's contract, not so with O'Reilly. Apparently, Colorado's offer for O'Reilly was a 2 year contract for $3.5M each or 5 year contract for about the same amount. Not sure if that can be classified as nickel and diming given that was O'Reilly was unproven two seasons ago and was on his second contract.

Colorado firmly believes that the starting point for negotiations shouldn't be 6.5 million a year. By taking him to arbitration, that takes some of the power out of the hands of O'Reilly's agent. They also remove the threat of a holdout, as there will be a set point at which he'll have a contract.
For me, this is a smart move by a club that doesn't want to be held hostage by one of the more ruthless agencies out there (Newport). They have a history of getting their clients to hold out for as much money as possible.

$6.5 million shouldn't be the starting point for ROR. That number is artificially raised due to an offersheet and offersheets by their very nature are overpayments.

1st on his team in goals for the season.
3rd in points
Plus a ton of intangibles (character, leadership, etc)
The guy is worth $6-6.5 million a season. The Avs are a much worse off team without a guy like RoR on the team. He does everything.

The lowest he can get in arbitration is $5.525M for a year (85% of his last year's salary), so he really has no incentive to sign for less.

Then they shouldn't have let it go to an offer sheet in the first place. We will see how this turns out. But right now I don't see to many scenarios where they get to sign the player long term to a salary they like. The entire sequence is incompetent.

He deserves, in this market, around 6 mil a season. He's tenacious, feisty, and has a scoring touch. This guy isn't a one trick pony, he actually excels at both ends of the rink -- which is a rare commodity, for his age anyway.
I fantasize about him joining the Flames for an average salary of 6.2 mil a season.
Oy, we can dream.
