So it was Ward refusing to play him THEN he 'was awful'
Yeah, you're right. I remember when he was sent back down, he was sat for the Heat's playoffs. When it came to the head for me though was the next season where he sat on the pine all year.

I think his handling of Irving was very poor and it was out there for all to see. I guess the question for me is, were other prospects also mishandled? He seemed like kind of a control freak to me, wanting to control what the players ate and what they did in their off hours.

I don't want to turn this into a Ward-bashing thread.

He seemed to do a very good job with several of the kids.

I didn't like the Irving situation at the time and I still don't. And you brought it up so I responded. But I'll stop there.

Once they buy into a system and learn the basics, wouldn't they flourish under Hartley when they're allowed more creativity though?

The other way around doesn't sound like it would work, but maybe I just bristle at the thought of Brent Sutter and Mike Keenan.

Back on topic though, Ward shows up in the NHL or Minor leagues for a little longer? (I don't know much about Ward, so I'm curious)

I said this in the Aces thread and it seems fitting.

I'd say he has earned another shot in the AHL. I would say his player development might be on par too as 7 of the players he coached in Providence were apart of the 2011 Cup winning team in Boston.

Well his team just won their championship so I'd say he knows how to win and get the best out of his players. I'd be happy with that hire.

I've also heard that the Halifax Mooseheads head coach Dominique Ducharme is interviewing for the job. He has the Pascall hockey Canada connection as well.

ADIRONDACK COACH SEARCH

Another priority on the table is hiring a new coaching staff for their American Hockey League affiliate, the Adirondack Flames.

And it’s a pressing decision, given the Flames’ development camp in the beginning of July.

“I think we’re further down the road on that (hiring) position in terms of the interview process and talking with guys,” Treliving said. “I suspect we’ll have someone in place by that time. Is it crucial? Getting the right person is critical but it’s a bit of a different situation (with an AHL coach). A good portion of those players that participate in camp, the coach in Adirondack could be coaching a lot of them. (The camp) is a really good segue in meeting those players.”

I guess Don Hay is going back to Kamloops.

I heard that Ward was a bit of a nut in the room and probably why the Flames let him go.

He seemed to be pretty hands on with the players, watching their diets etc. I was thinking college coaching would be up his alley but coaching junior should fit as well.

That's a bit of a surprising step backwards. His name came up for a few NHL coaching jobs and his release from the Flames looked like what he needed to take one of them. It seemed almost certain he was going to be assistant coach in the NHL somewhere.

Very surprised to see him accept a WHL job.

WHL coaches are installed long-term. Troy's spoken about wanting to develop a "destination program" for developing young men into good people and good hockey players. This is a great fit for him.

No, he initiated the departure as he wanted to go back to Kamloops. Doesn't sound like Vancouver was all that happy about it.

Troy Ward was interviewed on the Team 1040 here in Vancouver... a couple of things jumped out at me...

1. He implied he preferred coaching under Brent Sutter, as he was allowed to coach to his own system... when Hartley took over, he had to coach Bob's system so the players were ready when called up... I know this isn't news, but it was interesting how he described it.

To be clear, he didn't say anything negative about Hartley or that approach.. he even said it made perfect sense for the organization to do it that way.

2. He spoke about how teams differ with their views and objectives of how to run their AHL teams... some want to Win, while others want to Develop, while still others prefer to balance the 2... I felt it was implied the reason he's no longer with the Flames is they're an org that wants to heavily favour Development, whereby Ward prefers to try to Win.

Perhaps some people that watched Abby closely can speak to whether he tended to play the vets over the youngsters or something like that.

He went on to describe how its tricky to advance your career in coaching because the coach can be judged quite differently by people outside the organization, as opposed to his internal management... Ex. A coach might be judged based on his W-L to outside observers, meanwhile, his internal mandate is to develop the young players, even at the cost of winning.

Ward chose to coach in the WHL because he gets to A) coach his own system B) will be judged almost entirely on whether they win.

I found it to be a good interview.
