How do those chocolate fumes smelling Torts?
The team was in the playoffs until he threw his hissy fit and got suspended. He pretty much ruined the Canucks season by acting like a clown. The dude deserves the brunt of this miserable season to fall directly on him.

Just speculating, but Torts would be a really good fit as a Don Cherry type of media personality on one of the US networks.

If Torts can find another job then Torts will come out of this a winner.

He got about 4 million for a year behind the bench. Not bad.
I think he will manage for a while, with or without another coaching job. He will always have a TV gig if/when he wants it

i wonder if the canuckleheads will make a move before the casualty list in san jose is determined?
given the sportsnet likely needs about 90 analysts/insiders he'll be employed again by september.

I think he's taking way too much blame for a rapidly declining group of players with the Canucks. The signs of the decline were all there in AV's last season with them as all their star players declined the year before Torts came on board and this season was simply more decline combined with injuries. There seems to be this illusion amongst Canucks fans that a new coach will walk in and they will go back to being one of the top scoring teams in the league again and all will be well. That's simply not going to happen and the goaltending situation is worse than Calgary and Edmonton to boot.
How can you say he's not a good head coach? As a full time head coach he's made the playoffs 8/12 seasons. He's won a cup and has won his first round playoff series 50% of the time which would put him in the Flames HOF.
Nobody is saying he's the best coach in the game but the guy clearly knows how to coach. He's clearly got some temper issues and hasn't made any friends in the media and that's all on him for sure and nobody is debating that. Bottom line though is he has proven to be a decent head coach over his career.
|
I just don't think GMs are going to think that his baggage is really worth what he brings as a coach. He's a decent coach, but so are a lot of other guys who don't create a circus. He certainly didn't get fired from New York because of how his team performed (2nd in the league in 11-12 and trips to the 2nd and 3rd round in his last 2 seasons with them); it was mostly because of off ice stuff and how his players responded to him.
That said I generally agree with your point. In the last 100 games under Vigneault the Canucks averaged 2.50 G/G and in the 82 under Tortorella they averaged 2.32 G/G with their best player playing injured for half the season and every core player being older. The coaching wasn't great this year, but the Canucks issues are with their roster and not who's behind the bench.

As much as I love watching Tortellini lose his cool in press conferences I just don't think he would be as entertaining, insightful or interesting to watch as Don Cherry or even JR.

I love this quote from yahoo sports (full article: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-pu...041532804.html):
Quote:
The move makes sense, though. Tortorella was a gamble for the Canucks, who were hoping that a veteran group that had grown somewhat lackadaisical after its trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011 would respond to a shift from Alain Vigneault's gum-chewing to Tortorella's aggressive coaching.
Instead, the team got noticeably worse, failing to score 200 goals in a season for only the second time in their history, and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2007-08. Nobody had a good season. Nothing went right. And rather than providing the calm leadership one might expect from a veteran, Stanley Cup-winning coach, Tortorella tried to fight Bob Hartley in a hallway.
It may not be entirely fair to pin the decline of the Canucks in the back half of their season on that moment, but when you hang a lantern on a game like that -- when you earn an historic, two-week suspension at a time when your club needs points and they spend the next two weeks looking like a team without a coach -- it's tough to look past it.

Seems kinda strange to retain a bunch of the coaching staff and force the new GM and coach to work with them.

So he said he might start some preliminary interviewing of the coaches himself? Yikes.

No Trevor, Torts didn't mean the bottom 6 pushing the stars, he meant the stars let the team down. And he's right. Can't believe Linden couldn't understand that.

A clean slate is important. Well, besides keeping most of the coaching staff I guess.

If Tortorella ever does make it back to an NHL coaching job, it'll only be after he coaches in another league and proves he can have success again.
Strangely enough, like Hartley (though the personalities and reasons are different). Much like Hartley years back, I think some of the opinions around Torts right now are that his cup win may have been a bit of a fluke. Or at least, that any coach under the circumstances that he had, would have won as well.
I think he's shown he's a little toxic at this point. If he does want to coach, I think he'll have to take a step back before returning to the NHL.
As mentioned, if he chooses, I think he's got a great career in being a sports personality. A US Cherry seems like the perfect fit.

The are just keeping the video coach, strength coach, goalie coach and skills coach. I don't think any of those were really the issue with the team. Al those guys were there under AV, happens all the time.

Linden wants a veteran coach. Got to think Trotz will be top of his list.

I would argue they are all very important pieces of the coaching staff and could definitely be issues moving forward, especially the goalie coach with Lack and Markstrom in net.
If he was talking about a clean slate, it doesn't mean keeping a bunch of the coaching staff behind and making the new coach work with them IMO.

They thought they had a hard time scoring last year, no neck will have them lucky to hit 150GF. I think with a lunch pail roster Trotz is a good coach but with a bunch of offensive primadonnas that is a recipe for disaster. I hope it happens.

I thought Nashville hired Trotz in some other capacity.

Didn't say they were not important just don't think those particular roles were the issue with the team. Rollie the goalie coach is interesting, Luongo had a real beef with him but from what I know him and Lack get along well and Lack really responded to his techniques.
My thinking is they are being kept on until a new coach is hired and they make their own decision. Flames have kept video and strength coaches through coaching changes. Also don't think there are an abundance of qualified video and strength coaches out there.
