This saddens me greatly. As someone said earlier, he was the one constant from my childhood remaining with the team.

Hopefully he is retiring with good health.

He was the best.

In 2004 (actually, I think it was after the Phoenix game when we clinched) I got to sit in his seat in the broadcast booth, then I met him down in the hot stove lounge. I was actually kind of laughing at myself how exciting it was for me to meet this legend that I grew up with.

Sad to hear, and I truly hope he is going to enjoy retirement.
My memory could be off, however I thought Metallica played the Dome the night the Flames clinched against the Yotes. Which means they were on the road. Like I said, I could be wrong, but I think I remember checking my phone during the concert and telling the people around me that they had clinched.

Like a punch to the gut.

Thank you for everything, Peter. I'll never forget the first pre-season game after the 2004-05 lockout. The 2004 Flames captured my imagination and turned me into the biggest hockey fan out there. So when the 2005-06 season started, I couldn't believe that the pre-season games weren't televised. I found out the game was being broadcast on the radio and turned on the Fan960 to discover Peter calling the game between the Flames and Hawks, with our arch nemesis, Khabibulin, in net. We lost the game in a shootout, and I was so invested in that game. The way Peter called the game made me feel like I was right at the Dome.

I then spent my late teens and early 20's tuning into the Fan, whether it was during late night studying at the U of C library, or driving home to watch the game. Peter is as much to me the Calgary Flames as Jarome Iginla, Miikka Kiprusoff, and the legends who are already hanging in our rafters.

Thank you for your help in welcoming a young fan to what became one of my greatest passions in the world. God bless you, Peter. Enjoy everything your life after hockey brings. Yeah, baby.

No, they definitely clinched at home. 1-0. I was there. The place went crazy at the end of the game.

Very surprising. I always figured he would be one of those guys that worked until he wasn't physically able. Good on Peter for being able to hang it up, relax and just be a fan.

Maher's been a staple of the Calgary Flames and to me this is bigger than even Iginla leaving as it's truly an end of an era and things will never be the same. We should all feel privileged to have our favourite team be covered by such a classy individual for such a long time. Best of luck in retirement Peter.

Must be thinking of the final game which gave them the 6th spot? It's getting to be a long time ago now.

Sad, another legend gone

Wish he would have stayed on to do home games, gradual retirement.

Kind of wish he would have announced it would be his last season so we would have had a season to listen more to the radio knowing that these games would be his last. I'm sure he has his reasons though.

Very sorry to see Peter retire. Now, for the love of god Flames, do not replace him with a screaming baboon like the Oilers and Tampa Bay radio voices.

Agree 100% - kicking myself for not tuning in to a few more games this year. I will really miss his voice, his sense of the game, and his obvious passion for the city of Calgary and the Flames.

I just hope we don't get one of those pbp guys that spout nonsense for a goal call

"And he SCORES! How many humps does a dromedary have! Sidney Crosby with a beautiful goal to put Pittsburgh up by one"

Seriously. That was said

“@EricFrancis: Sad that a Rogers colleague would betray the request of management to keep the Peter Maher retirement under wraps until tomorrow #weak”

And that comes from the guy who came out and said that Tom Higgins was being replaced by John Hufnagal the night be for the Stamps had a playoff game vs. Edmonton...

Apparently the news was supposed to wait until after the Stamps were eliminated, and then he justified it by saying it was his duty to report the news or some garbage. What a hypocrite.

I absolutely despise that piece of crap Eric Francis.

He is sort of an indirect family friend and about once or twice a season I end up sitting with his wife and my mom and her pals at the odd games. A really genuine good person, Peter Maher is.

When I was a kid during an exhibition game he literally drove me to the game, did his pregame ritual involving Tim Hortons on Macleod right before the cemetery, brought me to the broadcast booth to sit next to him while he broadcast the game, down to the post game interviews in the Flames dressing room and into the Hot Stove lounge. I'll never forget it, it was an unbelievable experience. All that plus the odd random autograph... He is a 100% class act. Best radio play by play guy.

Sad to hear Maher is hanging up the headset. Met him several times he is such a genuine guy and an immense amount of hockey trivia knowledge.
