Someone please remind me what Weisbrod is doing today and who's short list he's on for any work in the NHL. You are correct about the no name guy but it's not Treliving. Kind of stunning given the genius of the Jankowski pick that teams aren't knocking his door down in hopes of hiring him.

I feel better about this GM hiring than I did about Feaster...
Not that it means anything, but the media seems to think it is a good one as well.
Time will tell, but Burke does a good job of surrounding himself with great talent.

Does this mean BP's Taco Pizza will make an appearance at Dome? I'm concerned.

Happy to see an up-and-comer, not an old guard guy, not a recycled ex-Flame (or ex-Oiler hah!) brought in.
The Flames need new ideas, a new approach and new energy to reinvigorate their management team. They have part of that with Connie; Burke is the "guiding mentor" to keep things steady and Treliving sounds like a perfect fit.
Time will tell, but he's been fairly successful so far -- hope he proves to be a great hire for the Flames!

Still waiting to hear if there are any restrictions on his input to Calgary's draft. Really hoping there isn't ... what a boon to add a fresh voice to the mix with the club's highest pick in Calgary history.

Flames vision is the antithesis of the Oilers old boys club mentality. So satisfying
Excellent, exciting hire!

on the Puck Daddy blog, Kypreos is mentioned to have stated that Treliving was the only person interviewed. That is interesting...was he the only serious/good candidate?
Or Burke was only going to interview 1 or 2 of the people he really wanted.

I would have been fine with a qualified re-tread hire but to me this hiring has a better upside as Burke still represents the old tried and true but Treliving will hopefully be able to show the old dog some new tricks.

It would, but after Conroy's interview the other day, I'm pretty confident we're taking someone good there no matter what. It would be the latter rounds where it would be nice.

Isn't it likely Phoenix doesn't allow him to join until after the draft? I seem to remember a similar situation when Craig Button was hired before the draft, but Dallas didn't allow him to start with Calgary for fear of divulging their draft strategy.

I could be wrong, but I think it was just the 1st round that Button was barred from.

I don't know much about this guy but I guess Burkie and the team seen a lot of good things about this guy. I just hope he won't force Hartley and the coaching staff to make the team play boring hockey game like Phoenix does. Anyways no experience as a GM but at least he is sorrounded with veteran management. I am sure he'll turn out to be better GM than some in the past.

interesting. I take this as Burke thinking this candidate wouldn't last long on the open market, hence the hire timing contradicting the "after the draft" statements we've heard from burke in the past.
Don't know much about the guy. Highest pick in franchise history, having smart folks debating it hopefully results in strong decisions come draft day.

Also, 7 pages, no No votes. This has to be some sort of record.

I love this from that Sportsnet article:
Quote:
The Flames have 33 players under contract for 2014-15 (including three entry-level deals that can slide). In terms of flexibility? The club has just 13 one-way contracts on the books, with a committed cap hit of just $38.17 million.
Treliving inherits a rapidly improving prospect base, an ownership with deep pockets, and a team that over-achieved in 2013-14 due to an insane work ethic and level of buy-in from a club in the first year of a rebuild.

Exactly as long as we take one of the consensus top 5 guys we are probably alright.
The bigger pick in that draft actually will end up being 34. If you can hit a home run there (Think Ryan O'Reilly for Colorado in 2009) then you really set yourself up for success.
Look back at past drafts and you see that usually 1 or 2 really good prospects end up going in the top 5 of the second round. That is the important pick.
